    I'd put money on it that there are more failures out there than this one. However, I still think that the gear driven cams are a superior design.

    I read your diagnosis and solution with earnest. I bet my 1986 vfr700's old motor has a similar problem. Symptoms were a fair amount of mechanical noise from the top end but good running none the less. I did adjust the valves but might have missed the missing spring.

    My solution was to transplant in another engine, this one is a 750 rather than the 700. My new one has 45,000 less miles. I think I am going to like it.

    The fresh 750 should be a blast, id love to swap a 750 if I could find one.
