I recently purchased an 06' Interceptor with 9500 miles. The previous owner took really good car of it and it even came with extra goodies (helibars and a storage pod/backrest for the passenger). I love the bike so far, but am confused about 1 thing.

It stalls when downshifting to 1st gear. I downshift through all the other gears as usual, then pull the clutch in and shift to 1st around (6-8) miles an hour. I come to a stop with the clutch in. It only happens when I have my girlfriend on it and even then it happens maybe 1 out of every 10 times. I rode a GS500 for 3 years, so I don't think it has anything to do with method, though this new bike is obviously light years ahead of the Suzuki.

Anyway it runs great and have no other issues, so just assuming that maybe I'm doing something wrong and there is a sensor that I'm tripping.

    Thanks
    -Steve

Does the tach or display go crazy when this is happening? Does the bike sputter or just cut out completely?

Nothing crazy happens. It just quits and the oil light comes on. Oil level is fine though. The Suzuki did that when it stalled as well. I just pull the clutch in and fire it right back up. It never takes more than 1 try to get it going again and it's idling just fine again.

Clutch probably needs bleeding, it's not completely disengaging. It could be something more subtle, bu that's the first thing I would check - or have a mechanic check.

Glad you're enjoying the new ride. What's your idle speed at? Any chance the throttle cable is a hair too loose? I'm a simpleton, so I start with the simple things.

It actually seems to idle a little low at around 7-800. According to the manual its +/- 100 RPM at 1K. It doesn't seem cause issue. It did stall on me (downshifting) again today on the way to work. I going to start shifting to 1st gear when I'm completely stopped and see how that goes.

Start with your idle. I'd be surprised if that isn't the culprit being that it's far too low. Adjust it to 1100-1200rpm as I believe spec is actually +/- 100 of 1150rpm, and it should cure what ails. If not, you should listen to those on this thread whom are more mechanically inclined. I only chimed in because it seemed obvious.

+1 on the idle. The idle on my 2004 was set low and the bike would stall. Not everytime but enough to cause me concern. I bumped the idle up to 1200 rpm's and it hasn't done it since. That was 3 years ago.

Thanks for all the info guys. I found the idle speed adjustment instructions in my manual and it can't be any easier. I'll let you know how it turns out. Glad to be here. It's nice to finally ride a real bike.

I got the idle up to 1200 RPM now. Thanks for the heads up. I haven't had it stall on me since. Getting off the line is much easier now too.

I just want to point out that I was the first person to mention the idle, and in 1100 plus posts, that may be the first time I ever said anything useful!

But seriously, glad its working out for ya!
