So I'm bringing my 98 in for a major 24000 mile tune up this weekend. I'm in California and read an article on the forums on the 5th gen and that the cost should be around $450 for major tuneup. does this sound about right?

In addition is there anything I should be looking out for? making sure they check? just pointers in general?

    Thanks in advance!

Question: I have read some different opinions on this but do you need a tune up at 16,000? I just turned that last fall. I have read of guys going alot longer than that without one.

That's a recommend service, if you're on top of the little things like spark plugs air filter oil etc ,yea not to big of a deal, thou from a warranty view still a good idea The valves are a major pain if you don't have the tools which is the other thing thats down on the pecking order to do, but Ive listen to bikes that have 24Plus that haven't had the valves done and are running like a swiss watch so it really come down to how you feel about it. Can you sleep nights knowing or not knowing?

Thanks RVFR. My bike sounds and runs like a top. Not to mention that when I sleep at night, I usually think about naked hot chicks saying " oh freewheel, your the man"!

I don't want to hijack your thread but I came onto the site to find out myself if I really need to have the 30,000 km (24K mile) service done, for my 2000 VFR, from what the mechanic said the major labor is for 5 hrs to do the valve check,I can do the plugs and filters myself, does any one have an opinion on that valve check? the bike is running great without any strange noises

It's all good, I wouldn't know about the valve check, although after my major 24k mile tune up I must say it feels much better riding now.

Better engine response, easier brake modulation, shifting is slightly smoother. those are the main things I feel.

Not exactly effective to spend $470 for these things, but for my peace of mind... well worth it.
