I found this little gem on the Dallas Craigslist and I thought I would share it with everyone. It has the largest asking price of any 1st Generation Interceptor I have ever seen. I may be a bit out of it but I do not think there were only 101 units made of this model. Am I wrong?

The motor has been rebuilt, the frame painted and the picture he's listed isn't even of the bike that he wants $5800 for. I bet that in 1983, they cranked out 101 of these bikes a day. The only way the bike could bring in that kind of money is if it was in showroom condition with almost 0 miles on it.

Yep, that's the way I figured it too. I used to like the proliferation of free classified sites but I think they lead to the ridiculous. Posting crazy prices and bogus information is the norm these days. If you notice every old bikes is listed as a "classic" or "collectible0" when in fact they are just old bikes.

My favorite ads are what I call the threat ads. You know, they say things like "if this bike doesn't sell this week, I am going to part it out on eBay!" This is akin to "buy my bike or I'll blow it's brains all over the internet." I have never been moved by this type of marketing however it would behoove a person contemplating striping a bike for sale to look closely at whether or not parts for that bike are actually selling. Often times a bike no one wants is also a bike no one wants parts for.

I would say that if this dude that wants 5800 dollars for a refurbished motorcycle is smoking a little bit more of the wacky weed then Squirrelman does...... what was the original price of these things in 83?

Chances are he doesn't really want to sell it, he is just making someone happy by "trying" to sell it...

you know..."well honey , its been for sale for 8 weeks, and no one has wanted to buy it. I guess it gets to stay in the garage"

As I recall, there were not too many 750s imported to the US in 1983...and no 750 was offered again until 88. Feel free to correct me if those dates are off...

The number of V45 Interceptors imported in '83 was relatively small - (2500 rings a bell); but I bought an '83 with almost a complete spare bike (in parts) for $1100.

If memory serves, the number of bikes was '2 per dealer' that year.

$5800 is stupid. I just sold one of my 83s yesterday. It was 100% original, and a 9+ for condition with only a few flaws, and new tires, battery, fluids, and a complete tune up (plus 2 brand new CCTs), and under 8800 miles, for $2100. Of course I had 3 really interested parties and it sold in 2 days, so maybe I sold it cheap.

Funny. I was going to correct you but decided not to as you were on the right track. I'm sure you were thinking about the insurance issues with the 750s which is why the 700s came about during that time.

Wow. What a nice bike. You've even got the stock exhaust on there (which is rare) along with the top end oiling kit. The mileage is so low that I think most people would key in on that as well. Personally, I think you could have gotten more for it.

I had listed it for 2250 a few weeks earlier, and never got a bite, but it might have been the weather.
Either way though, I only had around 1300 into it, so I can't bitch!

It wasn't an easy decision to sell it. I almost decided to just keep it forever and give to the kids, but at the end of the day I realized it just didn't excite me like a gen 2. I have one more gen 1 to get running and sell (hopefully in around 2 weeks), and then the hunt for a gen 2 will begin in earnest.
