Been finally getting to ride my old '87 VFR700 and it's a great bike. I love the sound of the engine. This is my first V4 and I was wondering if the whine the engine makes is normal? I'm assuming it's the gear driven cams?

Anyhow, it sounds awesome and reminds me of the old arcade game "Tron" for some reason.

Yeah, them's the gear driven cams! I just got my VFR, too. You're right, it does have a decidedly "sci-fi" sound to it.

I haven't gotten to play with mine, much... It's still waiting to get inspected & tagged. I've ridden it around a bit illegally with my Hawk GT's tags on it, but I don't want to push my luck!

    Congrats on your VFR!

O-ya! The sweet sound of gear driven cams....

Just to make sure, check all fluid levels (oil, coolant, etc.) and it should not sound like metal grinding.

My brother asked me about the 'whine' and wondered if the bike had a turbo?! Nope, just gear driven cams.

    Have a good one!

Cool guys! Makes me feel much better. I never knew a 700 could have such a throaty sound to it and the combo of that with the smooth whine is definitely unique!

Glad to hear she is up and around!

You aren't supposed to admit you are old enough to know what Tron is!

I still find the gear driven cam sound intoxicating, especially at lower revs. When she hits 10K plus, the engine drowns out the cams, making ear candy at both ends of the needle sweep.
Damn snow and cold....I just made myself homesick for the saddle.
