Peg feelers ??? Are they what we call hero knobs ???? lol. You guys must have way better roads than we have here down under.
OP If you are getting those sort of miles out of your tyres then you are a safe conservative rider. Who does not need the be all to end all in name of tyres. You lucky bastard. The stock Dunnies suck that's a given. But don't throw your money away on something you don't need. Get something cheap like the Bridgestone BT015R's. They last ok, better than the stock and by the time your pegs or knobs are scraping you about to run out of tyre.
All good really. The Viffer is no GSZYphffft. Tis what it is and will punch well above it's weight when needed if needed.

These are good points, chalk it up to me being a FNG here.

The tires are rotting out because I just picked up the bike in a fairly cheap sale, and it has not been well taken care of. Been fixing/replacing/catching up on maintenance stuff and the tires are obviously a crucial part of that.

Went through a few different bikes over the last 20 years, but haven't had one in the last 6 because of the family stuff (but DAMN am I glad to be back!). Once I get some new rubber on the bike, I expect it won't be long until I'll be working on wearing down those foot peg feelers.

Overall, I'm looking for some good sport touring tires, I suppose. I won't have any track days, and most of my miles will be 'spirited commuting'. It would be nice to have something I can get some miles out of, but I definitely need some tires that can hang on to the road on bike night.

Right now I'm leaning to a set of the PR2's, which I can pick up for about $240. The PP/PR2 setup seems pretty attractive too. I keep reading great stuff about the PR3's, but I'm not sure they're worth $100 more than the PR2's...

This has been a pretty useful thread, btw. Thanks for all the input!

A mate just changed his Q2s on his Gixer1000 for M5s, so far his feeling is positive doing a big ride next month to some brilliant mountain range twisites so will be interesting to hear how they compare over distance and differing conditions.

I would love to hear his comparative thoughts between the Q2 and the M5; mileage, grip, lean, etc. As yet, I don't have anything concrete on the M5's, other than posted reviews derived from sites that sell the Metzeler. This is made more difficult by the fact that many American sport riders are Michelin biased. As much as I would like to try the M5, the M3's are just so cheap that it prevents me from doing so. However, if your friend agrees with the M5 and is able to pull some decent mileage (4K miles+ on the rear) out of them, I would buy them on your word. Unless, of course, he finds the Q2 to be superior. At that point I would maybe try the Q2 since the temps in Colorado are beginning to warm.

Let me know, John. Thanks a thousand for the consideration.

No problem with luck the rubbish weather we've been having will clear long enough for a half day ride we have planned for this weekend, will let you know his early thoughts.

Sounds like your riding is a lot like mine. I have to do a lot of slab. My VFR had PPs on it when I bought it and the slab destroyed them in about 3000 miles. Complete waste of rubber.

Last fall I picked up a set of PRs on sale and with about 1500 miles or so on them, the slab is squaring off the rear already. Looks like I'll get a good bit more miles out of the PRs, as they should, but still not enough for my liking.

I'll buy the PR2 or 3 for my next set. I should probably start watching for a sale now. With a 2500 mile road trip coming in May, I'll likely need another set before the year is out.

    Good luck

Wow cannot understand how you got 7500miles out of Q2s, my rear Q2 center and sides were toast by 4700miles to contrast my earlier R2 Rears lasted 8750miles.

Good choice. I don't care what anyone says, you won't notice any less grip in 85% of riding situations vs. the powers. But, they'll last 2-3 times longer for sure.

Yeah I figured that I am going to try to use the viffer for a 45 minute commute this summer to save gas. If I can behave that is  They will be great for the twisty stuff I will hit in the off-time as well. This was a good thread for me.
