Part #12 on the fiche for the front wheel shows damping shims between the wheel and the rotors. Essentially these are paper washers. What are their purpose? Are they really necessary?

I have just the smallest bit of runout on my new rotors and it's because over the years these are not all the same thickness. At about $3 a pop for OEM parts (12 required), can I make my own out of ??? or just go without them altogether?

    Thoughts?

I believe that the washers are for damping out vibration under braking, I think they are called fiber washers. Dorman markets a large selection of fiber washers, check with a local auto parts house or Fastenal.

I have read that they are for minimizing runout

25-29 ft-lbs would negate any effect of that I would think. Ah, screw it. I'll try it without them. If I need to I'll make new ones out of gasket material or something.
