I am trying to remove the clutch assembly on my '85 vf700f so I can investigate possible bent shift forks. I need to remove the starter clutch in order to remove the outer clutch basket and according to the manual I need part # 07924-MC70002 (gear holder) to remove the primary gear bolt. I looked this up and apparently it is $45. I have only found one source that sells this tool. Are these model specific? Is there anywhere I can find an aftermarket universal tool or something? I hate to drop $45 but will if I absolutely have to.

    Thanks,
    Lucas

If it's the gear holder you're after, you can just stick a penny between the primary drive gears. The gear holder does the same thing (keeps the gears from turning by jamming them) but the penny only costs $0.01. Whatever you use, make sure it's softer than steel, so you won't damage the gears.

In case that didn't make sense, here is a picture, from the Clymer manual:

Gawd I love ingenuity. Nothing turns my crank more than a simple effective idea that screws some corporate asshole out of a lot of money consumers pay for basically otherwise useless things. Slothrop. If I weren't happily married I would propose to you.

Be careful when you try this penny trick, as it may cause strange men to propose to you...

I guess I need to get a clymer. Of course the Honda shop manual I'm using won't include any alternative methods like the one mentioned above.
