What's the difference on valve adjustments between a vtech model and a 5th gen? Is it significant? I'm planning to do my own maintenance once I finally get a VFR and was wondering if the 6th gen is much harder to work on due to the vtech.

    thanks!

Well, one thing I picked up from reading the shop manual is that you have to pull the cams and put a special tool in to hold the Vtech pins in place so you can check the clearance on those valves. Once done you have to remove the cams again, even if the clearances were O.K., to take those tools back out. That alone would make the process longer, and requires buying the special tools. The VTech shop manual can be found in the downloads section - fascinating reading even if you plan to pay someone else to work on the bike.

I've seen some quotes for vtec valve adjustments/16K service that made me shudder when I was looking into seeing if a 6th gen was what I wanted in late 09. I'd be interested to hear what they run for a 5th gen.

The cams in the 6th are also chain driven, so you have to de-tension the chain(s) to remove the cams. The 5th, being gear driven, is relatively painless to check & adjust. And the brake bleeding sequence for the 6th is involved, but I don't know how that compares to the 5th.

How much were you quoted for the valve work? I just bought a 6th gen (2002) with 23k and don't know if there has been any valve work done yet, so I am trying to save up to do so.

Sorry I wasn't clear, back before I bought mine I was reading up here, VFRD & googling vfr 800's and saw some ridiculous prices posted. One was for the 16K service If I remember right and was over $1000. I'll see if I can find tha one again, he even posted his receipt at the time.

The Local Honda dealer was vague when I asked, stating it should be around 4 hours work or so but wouldn't give a solid price.

A 6th Gen valve check should run somewhere in the $600 - $700 range.

A 5th Gen valve check should run you between $300-$400.

 Yow, I thought I escaped this nonsense when I traded my Ducati in. Oh well, I have 12,000 miles to acquire the tools and the know-how.

I just tried calling the previous owner to see if he did the service..he didn't. But he only had it for +/- 1000 miles so I tried calling the dealer he got it from and they are no longer in business :/ so I suppose I'll have to assume it wasn't done yet to be safe. Called Fay Meyers in Denver and they quoted $780.50. That hurts me to my soul, time to start saving up for that...
