This is a 2000 VFR. Stock electronics with the exception of an HID kit for the front lights.

All of a sudden the dash started freaking out. It is standing still. Notice the trip meter is counting up miles really quickly and the gas meter says empty when it is actually 3/4 full. any ideas? Last summer it's headlights were occasionally cutting out (then i replaced them with HID) dont know if that was in any way connected with the dash issue.

    any help would be appreciated

wow thats nuts. my first guess at dealing with crazy stuff like that is grounding issues to the ecu or bike.

Damn. I second Q. Simple stuff first. Start checking connected circut ground wire to true ground.

I've had a variety of ground-related issues that caused signals to go wonky (dimly lit until the switch was flipped, then dark) as well as the dash lights & digital display going blank. I tried cleaning/lubing switches & connectors, then finally pulled my head out of my backside & checked the grounds - I was getting power bleeding back through the ground circuit. I peeled back the wire harness up to the point that it tucks between motor & frame 7 found a few corroded splices into the common ground, so I just consolidated all grounds from the dash to one splice.
No problems now, except the previous owner's repair of a rubbed-out lead on the plastic circuit board of the dash. one of those large rubber boots made enough contact to rub through the metal "wire" on the board & the p.o. just bridged it with a wire. All of my other work disturbed that, so now i have an intermittent connection there... *sigh* I hear there is a product called Liquid Metal or somthing of the sort that allows those circuts to be renewed by bascially "painting" with this metallic liquid. We will see...
