regulator help

    hi there ive got a 5th gen 800 can anyone tell if this regulator is working correctly as i think it killed a battery last year, the symtoms are 12.8v before i start the engine 13.8v when its ticking over and 13.4v when revved up to 5000 all with the lights off.
    what i want to know is will this kill another battery??

    Can anybody to check these wires are it geting hot when engine started (cold engine) and lights off???

    With my own VFR800F last year the battery died on a long ride, well the mechanic said it was the battery. I stopped for fuel and then nothing.

    I checked the bike over for the usual issues, regulator good, wiring good, earths fine and voltage regulator checked out fine too. It was driving me nuts, why was my new battery going flat and everything else tested fine?

    So I spoke with an bike auto Electric Shop and they said that voltage regulators when they are about to die can sometimes begin to cut out after they have been hot for an extended period. To test this I ran the bike for 20 minutes or so in the shed (Vented of course) and just before the radiator cooling fans kicked in I notice the voltage begin to drop off. When the fans kicked in (Even under 5000 revs of load) there was nothing above 12.6 volts at the battery and voltage was falling (draining the batt).

    I assumed at this point the regulator was failing, as my battery was new.

    I installed a new regulator from my auto electric store and the problem has gone. I get good volts all round, regardless of load on the battery.

    -> Dainius_M Yes these wires get hot, even at startup, as they have a heap of AC current passing through them from the stator. Which is why with a dirty connector these three wires can sometimes get burnt. If they do this replace them. In your photo they look fine.

    But why your regulator dead you don't solve.

    Dainius_M not sure I fully understand your statement, but I will try.

    The OEM Honda voltage regulator like all regulators gets very hot. The Honda regulators are known for not having a long lifespan due to the design having some issues with the heat. This is due in part to the poor air venting and location of the regulator on the bike. So basically they cook themselves during operation and over time start to fail.

    To extend the life of your OEM (Or after market voltage regulator) you can install a PC fan on the heat sink of the voltage regulator to help with cooling and upgrade your wiring with a VFRNESS wiring kit, which helps protect your wiring. Protecting the wiring will aid in extending the life of both the voltage regulator and the stator.
