Would an 800FI motor fit in a first or second gen? That would be awesome!

Nah not without some serious work. A second gen really wouldn't really work either with out a lot of work. Mechanically you could get it in the frame but it would take a lot more than that. Also, those motors werent ment to be seen and arent as aesthetically pleasing. The best bet for a long lasting 1st gen 1000F is to find a 1000R motor for a decent price and pop it in there. Judging from what ive read that would be a plug and play swap. Someone please let me know if i'm wrong because im going to buy the first R motor I can find that is priced within my budget for this bike (sorry Donald)

I have an R motor in an F frame. It's very, VERY tight but doable. The rear valve cover can't be removed once the motor is in and it's less than a playing card away from the left side frame.. The F has it's thermostat on the left side and uses the frame for part of it's plumbing. The R's is on the right side. I wanted to use the F's plumbing so just had to flip the metal water passages that are under the carbs. There is also a few frame space mods to be done if I remember correctly but all in all, not an extreme up grade by any means. Tom(VF1000RS) did the swap as well but he cut and welded some new frame pieces to mimic the R's frame. He can give you more insight into problems that arose for him. You'll need the R's single ignition box instead of the F's dual setup. Maybe the R's coils as well, not sure if they're the same. Different jetting.

Early mock up for the R using the F as a mule. I was going to do SSSA setup for the F but now it's going in a completely different direction.(terrible cell phone pic)

Thanks for the info there Hopit. For the last few months i've been on the hunt for a complete 1000R in need of TLC and that is what I was planning on using.. if I can ever find one. I want the whole bike so that I will have all the parts on hand i will need to swap instead of having to wait around until something comes up on ebay.

If anyone hears of a junked 1kR for sale please let me know about it!

I should be able to get back on the 1kF today and if everything goes well i'll pop up another vid or 2.

Anyone re-painted anything with factory colors? Im trying to figure out if I need to use a basecoat for the blue and red. I've read that you do and also that you dont so if anyone has done it I could use some clarity on the matter

    Camshaft install for 1984 VF1000F

Quick question for you guys who have had experience with this. I'm just on the back end of a head gasket replacement. Cylinder heads are on and back cams (1&3) are in. For the front (2&4), it says to re-draw the indicators on the chain wheel. Is this so that you can get them in without them impinging on the rocker arms? Also, anyone know what the firing order is?

Darn I wish the manuals were a little more explicit with this stuff!

    Thanks fellas!

What manual are you using? Im also not sure what you mean by "redraw the indicators".

I used the Honda FSM (field service manual) and the vf1000 cam instalation is a pretty easy and strait forward process. It's sure a hell of alot easier than doing a vf500! Line up TR with the crankcase and put all of the cams in so that the indicator stamps (F-EX, R-IN, ect..) are all facing up then you install the sprockets on the cams and line up the index marks on the sprockets with the head. You might have to back out some valve clearance adjustment screws also on one of the cylinders. That is all of the top of my head so take it with a grain of salt!

Buy a Honda FSM off ebay if you dont already have one!

I can relate to that, although my mix would be a gen 5 motor in a gen 2, with 100% updated running gear too of course. I suggested it here earlier this week and pretty much got an eye roll for a response and that was about it. I guess that means I have to do it!

As soon as my Gen1s are done and sold I'll be looking for parts bikes. Unless I get distracted by something else this is next winters project.

I hope you do your swap and a build thread. I'd love to watch your progress!

Well I dont think i'll really be doing a major build with my 1000F. I just cant bring myself to spend a lot of money on a Gen 1 unless I had one with 3k miles that belonged to an old man who bought it brand new.

Anywho, i found a VF1000R on craigslist that I am going to look at next weekend. After riding the 1000F I really, really want a 1000R. I just dont think I can stand it anymore. The only other bike I'd buy right now is a pearl white Gen 2. God I love those Pearl white bikes.

It is a nice freaking day today and I took the 1000F out for a while this morning. Now when the winds calm down a little i think i'll hit the skies!

Here are a few pics from a pit stop this morning. I need to put my chin cowl back on! It just doesent look right without it!

$1500 for my Vf1000R engine. With carbs. Gear driven cams.
    Is that within range Pcohen;310196?

That is tempting but the '85 VF1000R i'm thinking about buying is the same price and I'll get the rest of the bike with it. Besides, someone bought my VF1000F earlier today so I wouldn't have anything to put it in!

I sold my 1000F because i took a closer look at the other cams and there are more tiny little pitts and scores than I care to mention. Nothing serious (yet) but enough to make me cringe when I ride it and that is just not a healthy relationship. Also, i want a different bike and my pocket book (aka my wife) says only one at a time

That makes sense to me to Pcohen;311525. Thanks for responding.
I think you will like having the gear driven cams.
