Help, 86' VFR 700f, I was doing 35mph and the ignition just quit and it will crank w/no start.

Hi, I was riding my 1986 VFR 700f home and the bike's ignition just cut out. I am the original owner and it has 26,000 miles on it. I down shifted and let out the clutch and nothing, turned the key off and then on and nothing. then stopped the bike and cranked it, it will turn over but would not start. I can crank it, the battery is fine and the lights work. just so you know it has Cobra pipes. other then that it is stock. It has four coils so that is out. one would go but not all four. Any ideas of what to look at?

 

if it will crank, look into the fuel pump not working

 

try looking at the fuel pump fuse...good as any place to start.... where at in new York is east Setauket? any where near Potsdam?(way upstate)

 

Kill Switch.....is it in the right spot?

is the kill switch working correctly?

Have you had problems with it or that control unit at all?

 

The most valuable tool you will ever own for a VF/VFR is a multimeter! Your ignition system is basically a chain..just find the broken link..check your plugs are you getting a spark..if not, work your way back to your ignition awitch..example: are you getting 12v to and from the coils, the cdi box, the kill switch, the ignition switch..check your ground..check your fuses. Its really basic. If your getting 12v and a good spark..gotta be your fuel system.

 

Fuel, spark- look for both of these.

 

I now live at 28 Walbridge Ave., Bayshore, NY (google this: 40.753442,-73.259143) it is on the south shore of Long Island. Potsdam is a long bike ride from here

 

I put a new fuel pump, filter and battery in last year. The coils checked out 11.20 volts each. what is the CDI box and how would I check it?

 

I would consider a fuel issue as the most likely cause and would check that first. Jump the pump to the battery and verify that the pump is delivering fuel to the carbs. visually verify it at the float bowl by opening a drain and then that the pump loads up and stops pumping. Jump the black/blue wire (I think that is the correct color but only two wires and the other is green and is a constant ground so you only need to jump the one wire to charge the system) at the pump and charge it up. If it is getting fuel and still will not fire then check to see if you have spark but do not over think it just yet as a CDI failure most likely will only affect half the engine and it will still run in most cases, just badly.

 

If it shut off suddenly without a few seconds of sputtering as if it were running out of fuel, it's most likely an electrical fault, so, as suggested, check for sparks at the plugs first.

 

I say check all your fuses......
