How do you deal with cars passing you on the right?

Last year I had a bit of a scare where someone passed me on the right when I was making a left turn and they nearly ran over my foot. Basically the guy was close enough I could have poked him in the eye if I reached out and touched him.

I try to follow the rules of the road as best I can and block my lane best I can like the safety course mentioned, but so far, everyone that is behind me are a buncha jackholes and will pass on the right regardless of if I'm in a car or on a bike.

How does everyone deal with those kinds of situations?

In SoCal, what you describe is the status quo. So, basically I keep a mental tally of how many cars pass me on the right. Once I get home, that tally determines how many beers I will consume.:boozer::drink: I assure you, there is absolutely no healthier way to "deal with it" :flame::ban::flame::banplease::flame:

I thought you meant you were going so slow in the fast lane that they pass on the right. I was gonna say move over. But in the situation you describe, there's not much you can do. I have people do that to me when I'm in the car, they'll squeeze through on the right even when it's a one lane road. I usually just figure they are in a hurry and just let it go. Water off a ducks back...

If you see them about to come by on your right in your mirror, blast your horn right when they get even with you. At least it will tell them you aren't happy...

BTW are you the guy who posted the video of a car nearly running a red light and in the process either running over your foot while in the turn lane, or nearly so??

That wasn't me. Was just curious because I've had some close calls with people passing on the right.

Last summer a yahoo from the GTA was up in my neck of the woods.

On an 80kph hwy, people turn left to go down to their cottage/home, the road rules state that you need to stop behind the guy making the left turn and you aren't allowed to pass on the right unless it's paved and you aren't crossing the white line.
I stopped behind the guy, so did 3 other cars behind me, waiting patiently for the left turn to happen.

A guy 4 cars back, obviously can't see me up front, decides its a great idea, that its OK to pass on the unpaved shoulder ($185 ticket if you're caught btw).
So as he's making his way past everyone, the guy in front of me makes the left turn, I start to go and then check my mirrors and lo and behold, good ole gent from the big city sees me, freaks out, gets pissed so I wave him through because I'm not playing with an SUV on my little VFR.

Its just annoying that people have no respect. It's true what the MSC instructor told us, after riding a motorcycle you have a new appreciation for other vehicles of the road and as a result you generally become a better and more alert driver on both the motorcycle and in the car.

Thanks for the input heh :)

A lot of what I do depends on how much time I have. I've followed people to the next light, got along side, and let them know they did something to endanger my life. Usually be beating their car. Saturns are harder then hell to dent. Typically I am a good guy. I am the one that tells people that their headlights/taillights are out, you went straight in a turn only lane, turned in a go straight lane, things like that. But when it deals with my life or parts of my body not working, yeah, I let them know.

I have come to the conclusion that no matter what the rules of the road are, people are going to pass you on the right. Therefore, when I'm turning left, I am as far left in my lane as I can get which gives the passing cars more than enough room to get by on the right. I think that this is safer than trying to keep them behind me as that will just force them to try to squeeze by through a smaller space.

I just let it go... I see far more motorcycle riders cutting people off on the highway/interstate and lane splitting (where it's not legal), even though I don't do it, it's almost seem hypocritical to complain about the cagers.

    ^^ What he said ^^

There is nothing you can do to stop people from bein' idiots, so you do your damndest to stay alive and well. My riding philosophy (and I've been doin' it for 45 years) is to expect every other driver to do the wrong thing ALL THE TIME - and be ready for it. That includes passing where it isn't legal to do so.

Always give yourself and out. When you are stopped to turn left, occupy as much of your rightful lane as you can safely. So if you see someone encraoching on your space, at least you have somewhere to go if you have to that does not entail an oncoming car either swerving to avail you or hitting you.

I chase them down, pull them over, and write a "citizen citation" (I made them myself, with a receipt book from an office supply store). I take the copy to the local police department with a letter explaining what happened, and ask for a court date, I then explain to the court what I saw, and usually the other driver never shows, so I win by default, and they get a bench warrant issued for their arrest!

Not really, I've always thought of doing that, but just don't have the disposable time to pursue it... My life has too many other pleasures, far more worthy of my time, then pursuing the never-ending, incalculable, all-embracing idiots I share this blue marble with.
