Where is the temp sending unit located on the 86 750VFR. What are some possible reasons why the temperature gauge never registers at all?

Thermosensor should be screwed into the front of the thermostat housing, with a wire coming off it. Not registering at all sounds like probably an electrical connection is not.

... and btw the thermostat is on the right side under the carbs, between the front and rear cylinders.

TO TEST the wiring and the gauge, VERY briefly (like less that a second) touch the lead going to the thermosensor to ground while watching the gauge. Key on, of course.

Gauge should go to full scale if wires and gauge are OK.

very easy mod is splicing in a 2-position toggle switch into this circuit
off = normal auto fan control, on = give me the fan NOW please

The sensor on the radiator is just to turn the fan on and off. The one that goes to the temperature gauge is in the thermostat housing.

Thanks to all. I found it and grounded it out as you suggested and the gauge and wiring from the sensor up checks out. My sending unit is the culprit. I Scooped a replacement housing, hose, thermostat, and sending unit of Ebay for a cool 9.99 with 10 dollar shipping. Beats the dealers asking price of 35 dollars and it came with a 14 day warranty. Good Looking.

Another possibility could be that the sensor inside the housing is fouled. When you take it apart, clean everything. Good luck.
