Is the plug and wires shown in the pictures below from this regulator failing?

If not then what could have caused this?

    Please and thank you.

Sure looks like it to me. When my R/R went south there was smoke coming out of it...

So you think this R/R is toast?

I guess it could just be a loose connection there. The manual has a test procedure for the R/R unit. Has it been charging your battery okay?

This was a spare I purchased on Ebay.

Thankfully the seller is sending me another at no charge....I just wanted a low mileage replacement that I could much around with.

I'll check the Honda Repair manual for R/R testing.....thanks!

That's where the problem lays with the older bikes. If those contacts are not super clean all the time. They start to corrode and build lots of resistance (heat) and melt the connectors. High wattage headlight bulbs increase the problem. Best is to solder them individually. The problem is then totally solved. OR use individual barrel butt type connectors on each of the yellow wires because they lock in and are easy to clean and grease with dielectric paste yearly. I soldered mine 20 some years ago and never had a problem since. Now my reg will run a little hot if I run my 100w headlight all day. Which I don't do anymore.
