    Hey Guys,
I have a chance to buy a 86 vfr700..its the pearl white version..it has 21k miles on it and it does not run. The bike is pretty much complete..it turns over but wont start..no idea how long its been sitting..the fairings are pretty rough..has 2 tanks..the guy didnt have a key for it so the ignition wires and some others are cut up some..

Hes asking $300 dollars for it..i know its a crazy question but would it be a worthy investment? It wouldnt be too bad to get it back together but i have no clue if the motor is toast..he said he couldnt get any fire. Would the parts alone be worth the asking price? Are these bikes hard to find and worth saving?

Yes. Where is it? The radiator, fan and brackets are worth $300 alone if they are in good to excellent condition.

I would think so but a pic would help, seen some rough ones that for that I still had to pass.

This bike represents a great chance for you to advance to the modern world of post -VF motorcycles.

Why do you need to ask ?? Go for it !!!!!!!!!! You'll either have a fantastic bike or make out selling parts !!

There are so many trivial, dumb reasons why it might not run now that could be easily fixed.

With a title, go for it- see if you can get it for $250 or $275.

    For $300....go for it.

You can easily get your money back in parts if you choose not to fix it up and get it running.

Well i pulled the trigger and bought the vfr..$300 with the title..heres what i know about the bike so far..its a RWB bike..pretty much complete except for the ignition switch is gone (no key) and the body pieces are pretty rough, side panels ok, no lower fairing. The seat is nice. He did have 2 tanks (not too bad), an extra voltage regulator (looks almost new) and an extra starter relay. He also turned me on to a complete parts bike thats in a local junk yard..cheap cheap parts. The bike has 24k miles on it. Thats all i know right now.
Tomorrow I will take some pics and post them..you can expect me to be seeking help because Ive never messed with a Gen2 before..thanks for all the input..it made my mind up to add this bike to the family.

There was an inexpensive ignition switch on Ebay....complete with key. Can't find it anymore.

Good luck with the bike. Check the valvetrain and be sure to post pics!

Thanks Slowbird..got it in my watch list. Im gonna take some pics today and post them tonite. Any suggestions on what I need to do and check to start with? Any known problems that need to be looked at? What about the carbs on the Gen 2 bikes, ive had the pleasures of dealing with the Gen 1 carbs..fun fun..whats the difference in dealing with the two??

I think the carbs on both Generations are a PITA.

Be sure to get new carb boots.

Check the valvetrain on the bike. (cams, valve adjustments etc etc)
Even though the Gen2's aren't known for Cam wear, mine has some.

Is that a centre stand I see?

I call dibs in the unlikely event you decide to part that bad boy out.

My advice is to focus one trying to get it to turn over. With the fact that it's been sitting so long and the mess wires/connectors around that starter relay, you'd wanna make sure it's worth the time to try and get it road worthy.

Jump on it. If you part it I call dibs on the frame and engine. Rebuild may be a bit of work but you will make oot on a part ooot. I have parted a couple of bikes and it is a pain in the ass, mailing shit gets old fast. Clean title?

Yes that is a centre stand you see! And you have first rights to it if its parts. The mess with the wires isnt bad..just gotta put it back right..it was a young kid who had it with no knowledge about these bikes..he said he was able to get it to crank but got no fire..imagine that lol..its got a pretty good oil leak so gotta figure out where from, make sure its nothing major..all in all everything looks pretty decent..lots of good parts if i decide to go that route..im gonna go friday and checkout the parts bike at the junkyard..may have a centre stand i'll let you know..its an auto junkyard so weird to find the bike there..the kid said it was a complete bike..ill let you know what i find

I have a question and it may seem dumb but its really not..my focus and knowledge has always been on the Gen 1 VF..i fell in love with that bike the first time i laid eyes on one. So really i am a noob for sure when it comes to the VFR..so my question is, in your opinion what makes this bike special? Compared to all the VFRs since why this bike..why does it create such a buzz???
