I've been fighting a twitchy throttle and surging at low RPM's in low gears and I finally found the culprit today by accident.

I was unwinterizing my VFR and was checking my air filter. As I started removing screws from the airbox I noticed the flapper valve was loose in the airbox housing. Thought nothing of it.

As I checked out my air filter I also bent back the little metal tabs that hold the flapper valve to the housing so it would fit tighter.

Reassembled, took it for a long ride. Surging is gone. Twitchy throttle is gone.

I guess I can put off buying my Power Commander a little longer now. Hope this helps someone.

    Thanks

Thank you for the post, I just bought a new 08 model and I'm having the same issue. I'll check those connections.

Sensational. Mine is a bitch on trailing throttle through long corners. Roundabouts can be a real pain.
So did you deflapperize your flapper or just got it too shut (seal) tighter when shut ????

I left the flapper intact. Once you look at the valve that closes the flapper you will see how it attaches to the airbox cover. I simply did my best to make sure that valve was attached to the airbox cover good and tight. When it wiggles around loosely the flapper isn't going to open or close properly. It's a crappy design. If it ever loosens up on me, again, I plan to devise a better way to attach the valve to the airbox cover.
