Does anyone know if you can replace the stock 45/45W headlamp bulbs in a 2000 VFR with 60/55W? Its simple math. The stock bulbs are $26 each and the others are $7 each and brighter.

OK, I just answered my own question. As soon as I replaced one of the 45/45s the other dim fialment blew. I bought a 55/65w car bulb, clipped two of the tabs so it would fit (as many people have suggested) and it has run perfectly for 3,500 miles in warm to hot weather.

Bottom line is that I have a new 45/45w in one side and a modified 55/65w in the other and I have had no problems for 3,500 miles.

Update. Its been almost 3 years later and Im still running 2 different bulbs. (the same 2).

Since I changed my bulbs my lights GO OUT when switching between bright and dim. Anyone ever heard of this problem. it only lasts a second or two and only happens 2-3 times a year (that I know of)... but its scary as h3ll... especially at night. Sometimes they come back on instantly and sometimes I switch them back and they come back on. I have never been able to repeat the problem in a controlled environment after it happens. Like I said I have only noticed it 5-7 times in the past 3 years. Nothing burnt, nothing loose normal 99% of the time.

    2000, w/ 42K miles

Have you had a look at the headlight switch? Maybe a spray with WD40 or something similar will fix it.

i got the same prob on my 99... i switched to 60/55's and they always seem to be going out..... I think its the voltage drop all the time causing the coil in the bulb to freak. Then vibration hits and it all goes haywire.... I'm going to see if redoing the wires with bigger gauge and a better relay will help....
