Hi, I recently encountered a problem with my starting circuit on a 1985 VF1000R. When I depress the start button, all I get is a clicking solenoid/battery switch. The next thing I did to remedy the problem, charge battery over night, clean and tighten all battery cables. Starter motor still will not turn, removed starter and solenoid/battery switch, had both checked. Both ops check good, I reinstalled the starter and solenoid along with a new battery. Still the solenoid just clicks, I checked and cleaned the handle bar start switch, still all I get is clicking from the solenoid. The neutral switch ops check good, not sure where to go from here, so I ordered a new solenoid/battery switch. Has any one else encountered this problem and how did you solve it?

So are you saying when you bench test the starter and solenoid it works?

If so then I would consider bypassing the harness and running a direct 12v if you can. If you have the manual study the wiring diagrams and see if you can't find the bad connection that way. A trusty VOM is your friend.

I've had this problem on vf 750, vfr 750 and 800
The starter clutch sticks in one position, if you put the bike in gear and rock it back and forth with the clutch engaged they usually free off and the bike then starts. Hope it helps good luck
