I have 85 VF500 i bought about 2 months ago. It's a real fixer upper. I've already done a lot to the bike:

De-rusted the gas tank and sanded, bondo'd.
    replace fuel filter.
rebuilt shocks with new fluid and seals.
blead out all the old brake and clutch fluid.
tore the carbeurators apart and cleaned 4 times (I'm a rookie) :)
    Replaced battery with new one!

    got bike was running! :)

Those are pretty much the main things I've done so far. Still need to paint it.

But before I can do that, here's my problem.

The bike was leaking oil from the bottom of the gear box cover. So when I changed out the oil. I took off the gear box cover (which was a pain in the butt because I had to jack the engine up to get the water pump off the get the gear box cover off :). well when I took the cover off a spring fell forward and so did a couple of interlocking sprockets. When I put it all back together It wouldn't shift out of first gear. (It was shifting through all 6 gears fine before I took the gear box cover off). So i took it apart again but without a manual or any experience I could only get it to shift up 3 gears.

I am getting a Honda Shop Manual online, coming in the mail.

Anyone know how to solve this problem?
Should I just wait until the manual comes in the mail?

The dots on the drum shifter and the shifter drum have to be lined up. your gana have to get a manual probably, its good to have one anyway

That's exactly what was wrong with it. I did end up buying the manual. After I took it apart again and followed the directions in the manual, it worked perfectly. The dots definitely were the problem. Thanks

Good example that people without the factory manual are prone to screw things up.....and sometimes cause expensive damage.
