I found this brand new 06' orphan right next to a brand new shiny 10' V12. See attached pic.

They also have a brand new 04' and two new 08's...

Hmmmm... another new 6th gen or a V12??

They have some black 11' V12s on order.

What dealership is that, Delta? Looks like their sales manager needs to slow his VFR ordering down. I bet there a few lurkers around that may give one of these bikes a new home, if the price is right.

I can't speak to the other machines, but I did see a local CL add that had the VFR1200 priced the lowest I've seen anywhere thus far at 12K.

I came across a dealer here in the Central PA area that still had a brand new 2000 Honda CBR929RR and a new '01 F4i on it's showroom floor. What amazed me next was the asking prices of each, they still wanted $9600 for the 929 and $7200 for the F4i.

Yep, 11K for an '06 is more than ridiculous. That asking price forces me to assume that even the best negotiator can expect to pay $9K; still too much. They're own assumptions of a fool walking in are obviously misguided - they've had the bike for almost 5 years. The 929 that 04 mentioned is even worse. At some point soon, it will be more profitable to donate these machines and take the deduction.

Lawspud, not sure if you'd be interested, but there is another dealership here in Denver with an '08 (can't remember if it's ABS) with a $9200 sticker. I'm betting $8200-$8500 would be accepted without hesitation, maybe even a scosh lower. There is some good riding between here and Inland.

It is hard to believe, but it must be more cost effective for these guys to keep these older bikes in inventory, and let them rot on the vine, than move them and spread the Honda love.

That being said, I don't ever let the "asking" price hold me back. My approach is to figure out what the bike is worth to me, make the offer, and if they don't take it I walk. I'd find it hard to believe you couldn't get the "flying fridge" for $6000 to $7000.

    havcar,

that $12K price is for a new VFR1200F? If so, where?

    Thx,

    DZ

I think that price is good only on the '07 model. I havn't seen discounts that deep on the '08...Yet.

That's the hard floor price, Law. I believe the dealerships make next to nothing at that price. With the factory incentive, they break even and get them off of the floor. Compared to what most of us have paid, it's hardly worth haggling regardless.

correct havcar, I would go into the dealer and say hey Honda advertised on TV 6999 for 6th gen and try to get them to come down on the 07-09 price, there is no diff between the 6th gens.

They're definitely worth MSRP, I think most of us get pissed at the fact that Honda eviscerated the resale values on recently purchased machines. In my case, about a year after purchasing it new. I can't imagine how pissed the guy that bought his bike 2 weeks before all of this got started feels.

I agree with havcar (at least on the 800)...both the 800 and 1200 are worth the MSRP...IMHO. Look at the price of a new Fatboy or Softail Custom and what you get for that money both in technology and R&D cost to the MFG.

I'm eating the loss on my 800, and on my new 1200 which I just bought today (for I'm sure way too much money a year out) but I'll be getting value out of it as lawspud alluded to.

They way I see it is I'll put the price in the numerator and the mileage in the denominator and see how small I can make the quotient while I'm riding the sheeeat out of them.

they are using the high price on the old bikes to "anchor" the price of the new VFR1200.

They could care less about selling the old bike, they are trying to sell the newer model.

Haven't any of you people ever worked in sales?

Not in the shifty auto/motorcycle side of the business. I'd rather burn baby monkeys for a living.

The anchor can work both ways. Even happens in restaurants although they do it opposite. There will be the outrageous priced sandwich in order to justify the rest of the mildly overpriced sandwiches. People normally look for the most expensive item on the menu and then step to the next level down.
