Digital Gauges on the Fritz

    My '98 Viffer's digital gauges are going on the fritz. The gauge resets "every so often," not necessarily at start-up; last night, as I made my 27-mile commute, the digital gauges must have reset three times. This means that the tripometer has been rendered useless, and the clock is always around 1 AM. Further, though, the engine temperature started jumping ALL over the place, from a normal temp of 187 right up to 270 (!), then back and forth like a ping-pong game. I was afraid the engine would automatically switch off (the manual says that 250 is the cut-off point). Lastly, the digital fuel gauge sometimes reads completely full, sometimes the correct amount (my estimation based on days it normally takes to drain a tank), and sometimes in-between. I can't accurately tell when I need to fill up. Added to this mess is, now, the analogue speedometer will sometimes cut out, as if there is a loss of connection, from 80 mph to 10 mph, and immediately resume function. This has happened only during the last week, and there is no surge at the engine. It happens repeatedly and irregularly.

    Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions? I've had my Viffer for three years and a paltry 33K, so I don't think these things should (or could) be "wearing out." What do you all think?

    Sounds like some bad or funky connections between the battery and <anywhere>, but especilly in and under the front cowl. Take the time, pull off the cowl and seat and go thru all the connectors to make sure they're clean and tight, including the main battery cables. Also check the battery to make sure it's in good shape - no bad cells, holding a charge. It should read ~12.5volts not running, and ~13.5volts above 3K using a multimeter.
    Oh - the next thing to go is the volt reg - @ $130 :eek:
