Guess I didn't have one tight enough and it vibrated out... anyone have a spare one laying around?

the bolts are the ones that look like they come out of Frankenstein monster's neck. (and that is pronounced Fren-ken-steen) also found on the F3/900RR's of the day. I'll take a look and see what I have when I get home.

Those Frankenstein looking bolts that protrude off of each side of the bike, holds the cowl on I believe (can't remember for sure, I never have mine on).

    Thanks Keager.

    Please!

Go to the hardware store and get you some 6mm X about 1.5" long Stainless Flathead (I prefer allen myself) bolts and some aluminum tubing that just fits over it. Cut Al tubing to length to leave desired amount sticking out. Costs you about 25 cents in bolts, and about 50 cents in tubing. Buy a couple of extra. I finally went with about 1" long, like my frankenbolts short.

Unless you're doing what those long bolts were designed for--strapping bungee hooks from your luggage--there is a wide creative choice of hardware options for this spot, every one looking better than stock.

I like the creative fixes, I'm wanting to keep the bike as original as can be so I'll need the original Frankenbolt.

    Thanks again Keag

Sometimes those "all original" goobers rattle my pans !!

Honda installed the wrong bolts, no one knows why. If the pope is not infallable, neither is Honda, and we can all find examples. They should have supplied the longer bolts as a "touring option" in a plastic bag under the seat, which would have significantly improved the bike's appearance, and i don't think many would dispute that.

No need to make the same aesthetic mistake the company did just to be a conformist.

Somewhere I still have a package of the quick release version from Sargent that I never installed on my 5th gen. ...I could look for them tonight if you'd like.

Sargent Cycle Products - Fast Access Quick Release Pins

You can have them for cheap if you want them. ...but like others have said, you can get a lot of standard hardware that will work if you don't need the extra length for bungee cords!

I appreciate the offer, if I can't find an original I may take you up on that.

I'm not usually a stickler for keeping a bike (or car) all original, just for some reason on this bike it's what I want. Not being a conformist.... just doing what makes me happy. I think that's all you can ask of a person.

No worries at all. If you want it correct, just order new ones. Part number 90116-MBG-000 (about $12.00ea from servicehonda.com, look under "Rear Cowl"). ...don't forget the 8mm washer that goes there too: 94102-08000 ($0.38ea). :)

Looks like a Bob Dylan copycat avatar.

Matrix, Bob dylan all copy cat ideas.

    I like original ideas.

At least you know how to get actual part numbers and not just call a bolt a Franken bolt, and think people will know what you are talking about.

Funny, I came here three years late to the party after losing a Frankenbolt and doing a search. The first thread I found was this one. In my VFR-experience, having bought my 4th-gen in 2000, most people know what a Frankenbolt is just because they're so obviously straight out of Frankenstein's neck.

Thanks, folks, for the non-OEM alternatives, and the OEM part numbers as a non-non-OEM alternative. ;)
