what is the point of stealing a lid without the d-ring? can that strap be replaced? What good will it do if it's not strapped to your head?

Wow that sucks. It would be very cool of the manufacturers to only send a replacement once they receive the original back, and determine that it wasn't sliced off and stolen.

Or only sell to registered owner. But really, any of that will be gotten around. Some people just suck.

    These are on Ebay.

    Cable Lock

The cable is only 2' and it seems like it would be easier to carry on or off the bike.
Not particularly impressive, but all we really do is discourage the casual thief anyway and it might do that.

Motorcycle Consumer News just did a write up of 10 or so small cheap cable locks specifically to lock up your helmet or jacket. Security wise, since it is clear that they aren't meant to really deter a determined criminal who really wants your stuff, but the more casual thief, they tried to cut the cables with a pair of simple wire snips, the kind someone might keep in a simple tool kit in the car or truck. Some of the cables were snipped with one try, some lasted I think it was 5 minutes of trying before they gave up. Figuring a casual thief would give up after a couple minutes of trying too. I want to say one of the highest rated went for only $10. Might be a better choice than some no name brand cheap imitator you get off EBay.

While I agree that Ebay isn't known for a lot of high quality products, aren't most of the cable locks made in China?
Were any of the ones they reviewed actually made in the U.S.A.?
Unfortunately, the name brand doesn't mean what it used to.
A friend recently showed me name brand light bulbs, (GE & Sylvania), made in China and Walmart's private label bulbs were made in the U.S.A.
That really surprised me since I have always considered Walmart to be the original Chinamart.
Even my new Toro snowblower has a Chinese engine as do some BMW motorcycles.

you would have to check the article, as I didn't/don't pay attention to where things are made, the quality of the product is more important to me. As for name brands, a couple of manufactures offered more than one model - I think as I didn't do more than scan the article since I have a cable lock already, and because even the one I have I haven't used in years.

The overwhelming majority of Wal*mart products are made overseas, their buyers don't shop quality but a focused purely on price. So much so that some manufactures of home products with manufacturing in the US, manufacture their Wal*Mart stuff in China so they can meet Wally's price demands.

The BMW's made outside of Germany are, if memory serves, are eitehr for the Asian market and all their small engined bikes since the profit margin is lower on those. Plus didn't Hardley build a plant in India a year or two ago too?
Even on most of your "domestic" cars you are going to have ones made here but of significant overseas parts. You also have "domestics" that are manufactured outside the US, with no or very limited US parts. Conversly you can get an "import" that is built here of over 90% domestic parts.

And I love EBay, use it all the time. I would be more wary of a no-name product where there is limited recourse if you have a problem. And that may not worry about the quality of their product, since they may not be looking at the long term sucess of their product line.

No pics, but if you remove the seat, you will find two "hooks", one on each side that you can put two helmets on.
Hook the D ring over the hook and replace the seat.
And yes, the helmet rests against the painted bodywork.
I didn't care for that so I don't use them.

I don't use them. I carry a retractable snowboard lock that I loop through the helmet and through the metal that the passengers pegs are on. The helmet sits on the seat. Here is an Example, they are pretty small and inexpensive. Just go to Amazon and do a search for "snowboard lock" and a bunch come up.

I'm sure if someone really wanted my helmet it wouldn't be much of a deterrent, but for a casual thief it would stop them cold.

Photo as requested. I put my lid on there for illustrative purposes, because I rarely use the hook. I just don't trust it to prevent theft, so the helmet goes inside with me.

All these problems would go bye-bye, save money and communicate to the general public that one is indeed a "bike person" by simply not ever removing one's crash helmet save for ablutions, dining and unless one might become one of "The People of Walmart" trips to yonder establishment.

The 3M product way up yonder or over across the pond yonder, that protects the paint is called "Rhinohide". Many times sold as a kit for cars. Best buy is via a 3M distributor.

Wow, thanks for the pics Matt! I saw those little hooks there but for some reason I thought they were to hold the seat in place. I see why no one trusts it though, looks less than secure.

I went to the local police station and picked up a couple of pistol cable locks. They are FREE and have a rubber coated cable and plastic covered lock...no scratches. I put the right rear peg down and hang the helmet on it, then run the cable lock through the d-rings...lock is yellow and very visible. Works great and again, its FREE.

Just use a little acetone and take the black writing off, and no one will ever know.

Is that cable long enough go around the chin bar rather than using the d-ring?
