    Hello all,
Im getting ready to start a resto-mod on my 84 VF700F..I actually have 2 identical bikes and my plan is to take the 2 and make one nice bike..each have their own set of issues but whats good on one is bad on the other and vice versa. The question I have is was there a known problem with the frames swelling due to water getting inside? Seems I read this somewhere once.
One of my bikes..on the left side of the frame..where it starts to curve around at the bottom / rear of the motor..the frame is swelled out..not flat like it should be. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Was this a common problem? Is the frame toast? To risky to ride? I'll try and get some pics of the frame and see if i can get them posted.
I do plan on posting the project once I get started. Im rounding up some parts right now so it wont be long.
As always thank you for all your help.

    Dutch

Not a problem in Miami but surely in New England. Yes water can get in the frame and if it's cold enough and if there's enough water in there, it can freeze and distort the frame. I have seen pics of this happening. Just a small hole drilled underneath in that spot and no worries.

I have that bulletin about drilling the frame. Also where the gusset is welded in at the curve will collect water also. I found out the hard way. If the top of the gusset is not welded tight/closed water will collect and rot the thin frame. If you need the bulletin I could scan it and post it if you want.

the right side on my 500 is like that just behind the bend, it's never caused me any problems. As long as it's not thin or cracked. I don't think the steel tubes mind if they were bent by a 2 million dollar CNC bender or a little bit of frozen water as long as it hasn't been "worked" to the point of softening. Yes, it will have an effect on strength but unless you turned your bike into a motoX machine or scraping the pegs around a corner and hit a speed bump I don't think it's a huge deal. If you'd seen some of the cobbled up crap I've seen on the roads (I'm a cop), you'd prob have a heart attach. The sad part is that it's generally not the cobbled crap that falls apart, burst into flames or any other catastrophic event that ends up killing people.

Here is the FSB for the VF500F, should be similar to the 750 and 1000.

Hey Guys thank you for the great info..just shows what a great forum we have for our bikes. Heres a couple of pics of the frame..the surface rust area is a high spot on the frame where it should be flat..hopefully you'll see what im talking about the frame being swelled.[IMG]
