'83 cam disintegration and oil in alternator cover

    Maybe I'm crazy but it seems like the basic shape of the head on the cam cover mating surface is just too different to have it line bored and use the 86' hardware. There is a small lip where it was line bored and the big semicircle rubber of the gasket goes in. Also it looks like a few parts such as where the cam chain and sprocket sit are just shaped differently.

    If you compare the parts I highlighted to the older head, they don't look too compatible.

    I tend to agree.

    My goal for my '84 project bike is to build a modified '84/'85 head with - at a minimum - upgraded inner and outer valve springs to eliminate valve float at revs above 9k.

    Attempting to line bore the camshaft journals on an '84/'85 head might be risking hubris.
