Last year I had an issue with my bike dying coming off an interstate...

    http://vfrworld.com/forums/mechanics-garage/32516-6th-gen-stalled-will-not-restart.html

This week I discovered that the 30amp fuse was getting obscenely hot, but hadn't melted anything yet. I completely rebuilt the little harness using 10gauge wire and the wire temps are all great, and even gained voltage at the battery posts.

Along with rebuilding that harness I pulled every plug I could find apart to check for corrosion and applied di-electric grease to all of them.

My question is that I don't know if this was a contributing issue that caused the scenario in the link above. We've had a great couple of days here in Iowa and I've ridded it to work on that same route both days with no issue.

I'm planning a long trip in about a month, but am a bit gunshy still.

My options are to fully trust the bike again and hope the plug cleaning/lube and harness fix did the trick, or just gradually take small rides and not venture too far form home for a while and let the trust gradually build.

    Thoughts?

do a quick 100 mile out and back.... That will tell you if your gonna have problems... I agree with the little bit gunshy..... I had an electrical problem stall out a trip I was on and it fried every bulb that was burning plus all the fuses found the problem(actually TOECUTTER did) and havent had the problem since..this was two years ago.... you more than likely fixed it from the sounds of it. but for your piece of mind, maybe a quick out and back will put your mind at ease

Agree with Crusty take it out locally. Like a 50 mile radius and ride, in a circle, so you won't be anymore than 50 miles from home but can ride 2-300 miles. Ride for an hour or so then stop and let things cool down a bit. Then ride like you normally would on a trip. If all is good I'd go for it.

I take a multimeter, spare R/R, wire, butt connectors, shrink tubing, soldering iron, electrical tape, fuses, tie wraps, dikes, and a trickle charger on every long trip. On my last trip, my bike died late at night just as I was entering the drive for my friend's condo in Florida after nine hours in the saddle. Wires and connectors were burned through (you know which ones). Sure glad I had my "kit" with me. It really takes up very little space. Got it all fixed up in a couple of hours, charged the battery over night, and was good to go for the rest of the trip.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll take the long local ride tomorrow and see what happens.

The bike has had all the recall work done.

Riding to work again yesterday the wires all felt find and everything seemed to be ok.
