From my research, it seems that heat or wiring connections are the culprit that causes them to go bad. If anyone knows for sure why, let me know, so I can do the proper preventative maintenance. If I have to move this puppy somewhere else or go through all the wiring and connections so I do not get stranded. Thank you.

Be sure the plug connectors to/from the r/r are clean and tight and that nothing you have packed under the seat blocks airflow.

Frequent inspection of the 3 yellow wires' plug IS preventitive maintenance, and you'll spot most problems there first.

Make sure to pack all them silly Honda unsealed connectors full of dielectric grease too, helps keep moisture out of them and prevents multiple types of corrosion @ the terminals.

Because this seems to be a week link on the 5th gens, I had a good look at mine when I purchased it with 18k. I could see that right where the yellow entered the RR it was showing a slight sign of overheating. Takin others advice I cleaned up and dielectric greased it. I also mounted a .1amp computer fan right on it, held with a zip tie and wired back to the running lights. Comes on when I turn on the key, forces air right against the fins and I figure this has to help, it's just in a bad location. i see many RR's mounted out in the open, not tucked behind plastic. Bike has 40k now, same RR

Thanks for the idea, I have lots of extra computer fans. But does'nt water hurt it when you wash the bike or rain?

Do not give up hope and if you can share your research with us it would be appreciated. Those dad-gummed pesky regulators are a real problem.

I've had a computer fan on mine for about three years now.
I wash the bike often and so far no problems.
Also I changed to a heavy duty 50amp regulator and wiremybike bigger harness.

BTW, I have some new fans left for sale if anybody wants one.

water has not been a problem, I would think it would be hard to get wet, given the location, air has a hard time getting too it, hench the overheating issue. I,m close to bidding on one in ebay and just carrying it around under the seat for that rainy day when it does fail. Alittle overboard, but would hate to be stranded on some long run of a ride. Tennesse and deals gap again this year, 1600k ride from my house to the dragon. Yet so far the fan seems to be doing well for others who have logged plenty of miles without issues. Oh, and I wash my bike twice a week at the firehall, I can't even stand dusty rims. haha. VFR's were mean't to shine.

hi guys i realise that when my bike start to get hotter my voltage getting more and more unstable, like on signal/brake/headlight fully with low beam my voltage can flicker around 11.6-12.2 v however when i rev over 5k it will still charge to 14.4-14.6v

could this be a r/r problem ? does this call not holding charge ?
