Hello every one! Thanks to google I found this site  Can't wait to dive in and see what great info has been posted here. Anywho.. I just bought my first VFR800 bout 2 hours ago.. picked it up rather cheep I thought.. it is a 2002 with a lil over 8000 miles on it. It has some scratches on the left side fairing, guy said he laid it over at a low speed.. I tend to beleive him because there is not much damage at all. Anyways I only gave $2300 for it. So I thought it was a steal.. I have not owned a bike in a few years.. so I am going to be getting my feet wet again with riding. My last bike was a GSXR750.. and I also had owned a Katana 750 at the same time. Loved my gixxer! Katana not so much.. I dont know a whole lot about the VFR (hence why I am here) but I know better then to set my expectations as it being a all out sport bike like my gixxer was.. but I still think it will be a fun bike. And now that I am a little older prolly more fits my style now anyways.. So a few quick questions.. (some prolly gonna be squid questions lol) But first basic maintenance of the bike, any thing special that I should know about? What kind of realistic HP does the VFR800 put out? Not that it really matters too much. More just curious. What kind of speeds is it capable of? Not that it matters either.. but hey it is a sport bike, right? We do like to go fast haha.. And last (the real squid qustion lol) but how easy can it wheelie? I do not want to ride wheelies everyday lol, as it is kind of a heavy bike and I am sure not to good on the fork seals.. but like I said it is a sport bike.. and what fun is one if I cannot get up on one from time to time. Thanks, Joe

Welcome Mojo. We don't exceed the speed limit at all here. We don't do wheelies either. We just wash and wipe our bikes every Sunday after worship. We don't need any pix. We can all see your bike telepathically.

But seriously though, your new ride is still a puppie. My 06 has over 72,000 miles and it still runs like a top. But never over the speed limit. Play around with some of the tabs on this site. You will probably find an answer to just about anything you want. If not, Ask. SOmeone should pipe up. But I know squat so am not much use for you.

    Welcome aboard
These bikes usually put out HP in the low to mid 90s range stock. High end speeds in the 140s(actual speed, speedo will tell you 150s but expect to lose about 5% on stock speedos).
These bikes are fairly heavy so they feel pretty solid at higher speeds. They aren't Gixxers, but still handle pretty well.

    Congrats and welcome aboard.

I own a 5th Gen (the model before yours), so some of my info might be a little off, but should get you started:

    1. To set the clock, turn key one click, press and hold the odometer reset button and the temp button simultaneously for about 3 seconds. Should start to blink. Adjust from there.

    2. As drewl said, RWHP somewhere in the 90's usually.

    3. It will wheelie, but some of this will depend on your weight. Remember, she is a heavy sucker. I'm sure that with a slow roll on of throttle, get into the Vtec RPMs (6700 for a 2002 model?), back off the throttle and then snap it back on, and I suspect the front end should come up.

    4. I believe the 2002 had a wiring harness recall? Easiest way to tell is if it was done at the dealer, they should have stamped/punched the VIN tag. If not, you WILL want to get this fixed. Regulator/Rectifiers notorious for failing on these bikes.

The most typical mods to this bike (not in any particular order)
    Exhaust
    Seat (Corbin or Sargent)
    Heli Bars or similar
PC III - apparently helps smooth out the Vtec transition and slower speeds
Sprocket and Chain (if your willing to sacrifice a little top end, go up 2 on the rear sprocket).
Suspension - Probably the biggest "shortcoming" of these bikes. If you used to being able to adjust on your Gixxer, you might find the stock suspension on a VFR maddening lol

There's some basics. Use the search function on this forum, and you'll find more info than you can shake a stick at. Good luck.

Oh yea, don't ask about what kind of tires or oil to use... :)
