I am about to buy a 2002 with 10,000mi, should I be concerned about the stator. I had read that there was a recall for the stator, also is there wiring that goes bad on these bikes. If so is there a way to fix the problem before it becomes a issue, or should I not worry about it till it happens.

    Thanks

on the VIN tag on the side of the frame, there should be a punch mark on it if the recall was done.
the problem w/ the harness is if you add a bunch of electrical to the bike.
IE hand warmers, GPS and that kind of farkle.
then you nee the VFRness, or make one yourself.
I have had my 02 for 20,000 miles with none of the recalls done and I've never had a problem at all.
    hope that helps

The stator is not the problem. What the Problem is/was the Regulator/rectifier (r/r) stators do not haave a tendency to go bad You may want to pick up another r/r and keep it handy, or just do the VFRness conversion.
I'ts nothing fancy just bigger guage wire..

My stator did actually go tits up before its time. However, I think it was unusual. No idea why it happened, but it was a total pain in the ass.

It was around 16k, on a bike that was just over 2 years old and no electronics except a PCIII.

^^^ Definitely the case, I can't help but to think I was doing something wrong. Maybe winter starting without riding put a strain on the charging system or something, not sure. Like I said, it became apparent that the stator's failure was not a common occurrence at that mileage. On the positive side, I had the R/R examined during the stator replacement and it checked out fine.

must have been speed. your stator just couldn't handle traveling that fast.

That was the opinion of the mechanic as well. He said I had gone fast enough to have traveled into the past. So far in the past as to create a paradox in the space-time continuum whereby the stator's very existence was nullified, hence its failure. Not sure if I can trust his expertise though, he worked at a dealership.

If the stator was never replaced is that something i can do at a dealership without a cost because of the recall. Or is original owner the only one who can get the recall without having to pay. It wouldnt really bother me either way I would just have the priced lowered accordingly if i had to pay for it, whenever it finally did die.

No free stator's as there was no recall on them. The only thing that you would receive free is the R/R service entailed in the recall. It would remain free of charge for you provided the current owner hasn't already had the work done.

I believe the most common cause of stator failure is a result of shorts that develop in the 3-wire plug as the connections melt and wires contact one another.

So i decided to educate myself by reading the various R/R threads out there. Being a person who has a electronics background i was able to understand the concepts. When I end up buying this bike I will take into consideration that this problem might effect me, I will probably keep researching till I can put the pieces together and maybe find a viable solution. However I can be pretty lazy and ill probably buy the bike wait till it dies, and get interested again and try to fix it. I will check to see if he had the recall done, the person selling the bike was a honda tech for some years so I am sure he knows about the recall. I might even be able to get an answer to the question.

I'm going to have nightmares now reg, thanks for that.

regarding the R/R - check any motorcycle board and you'll find it's a pretty common failure point regardless of manufacturer. Some just more often than others. It's a fact of life on two wheels.

    hey now!!
    I ride all the time.

on that note, bring your bike to the dealer, he can run your V.I.N. and if the recalls have not been done the dealer will take care of it.

I have not done mine yet and just got another notice to have the work done.
Now the problem is I have one dealer in my area and I would not have them do any work on my bike.

I will most likely do that, I need to go there anyway cause I ordered a new jacket and gloves. So if i have the bike by then ill just take it up there or at least the VIN number anyway.
