Hi all.... I have an 03' 6th gen with only 13,000 miles on the clock. I have noticed this past fall that the coolant temp is sometimes hard pressed to get above 155 degrees if the outside temps are in the 40's. could my thermostat be stuck in the open position? Any Thoughts?

It is surely the problem, will bet a case of beer on it. Should run aboot 178 degrees no matter what the ambient is after it comes to full temp.

Agree with Toe. But for how long are you usually riding it, it takes a while for mine to get up to temp in these frigid times, and I know my tstat is ok.

I would do the hand on the hoses thing before replacing it, depending on your riding time and RPM if it is 40 degrees out, you may not have a stuck thermostat. Chances are you do, but replacement is such a bear, I would say look at it a little more before you go to change it out.

I have the same problem, after going for a ride w/ another member. His bike was running at 178 degrees and mine would not go over 158 degrees after 3 miles of uphill at 6,000 rpm.
    Air temp was 38 - 45 degrees.
    T-stat is stuck open.

Wow very nice write up. Does anyone no if there are any ramifications if I do not make the repair? I would think the cooler the bike runs the better. Just need to get over that magic 150 degrees!

Your engine needs to run at the specified temp to keep the fuel system from running in a cold start condition and running rich, the oil viscosity is rated at temperature, and the V-TEC requires the engine to be a temp as well. You should correct the problem as soon as possible.

YUP, last year in August, I had the opposite issue while riding the mid-west when temps were averaging about 100. Engine temp hovered around 220. When I got back to Colorado, and was crossing one of the passes while it was rainy and cold, engine temps dropped way lower than normal.
A new thermostat fixed it just fine, and until the roads were snow-packed and icy, engine temp stayed within three degrees of 178 even when it was -5f.
