Well it sounds like you are already going in the right direction. The best way to succeed at being smoke-free is to have the right mentality. Have pride in yourself that you are making one of the best decisions iin your life.

Be creative! Have friends and family be aware you are quitting for good and if they see you smoking, they have your full permission to kick full force in the cojones! Because any pain felt there is not as serious as the health complications that await later in life if you continue to smoke. (and your friends will totally support you on this as well haha)

Seriously though, it is very good to have friends and family be aware that you are quitting. they can give you that little bit of extra encouragement in the beginning when it is the most difficult.

Replace cigarettes with something else. A coworker of mine actually started to eat an apple on breaks in the cafe instead of smoking a cigarette.

No matter what you choose to do to keep yourself smoke-free know that you can do it. It is unnatural for the human body to take the beating it does from cigarettes so the day you commit to quit, it's the day your body repairs itself and you will be sleeping much better, wont get as sick as often, and best of all you will have an extra grand in your pocket next year to spend on the VFR!

I think the motivation is a personal issue. What motivates one person wouldn't affect another. here are a few thoughts...

    1. do you really WANT to quit or are you just F#cking around? you have to want to quit. if you want to quit, you will quit. just don't ever have another one. ever. not once.
    2. once you quit, you realize just how bad you used to smell. and everybody else smelled you. the smell doesn't wash off of clothes, & carpet, etc.... I kissed a smoker once after quitting. yuk. only once. never again.
    3. if you quit, you can taste food.
    4. make it a Test of Wills. who has a stronger will, you or that coffin nail. who is in charge here?
    5. sucking smoke into your lungs is REALLY good for you. think about it.
    6. second hand smoke is a swell gift for you to give to your friends & family.
    7. they call them Cancer Stix for a reason.
    8. $$$ Instead of buying ciggarettes, put what you would spend on smokes in a piggy bank for a year & see how much you save. pack a day = 1/2 a Gen 5 VFR in a year?....something like that?

I'm sure others have other motivational thoughts.
I tapered down using lower & lower tar & niccotine brands. Once i quit. I knew that i could never ever have ONE again .... or else I'd start.

And like LJ said above, the "hand to mouth reflex" was the hardest for me to deal with. i replaced the Marlborough with a beer........not the best choice. his working out idea is waaaay better.

Good luck, dude....do yourself the biggest favor you can do. Stop smoking tobacco.

Checking some old blogs of mine and seen this one. Haven't fired up one since I quit over 2 years ago. One of the best things I ever done. Had a friend buy a pack of marlboros the other day and seen what he paid for the pack,

With all the stuff that is "shared" here like ingrown toenails and other important shit, how bout just a simple Q&A on smoking.

    Q:

    1. I smoke
    2. I never smoked
    3. I used to smoke and quit.
    4. What I did on my Summer vacation in 2005 which has zip to do with smoking but since I don't have an ingrown toenail and I get off to seeing my handle on the net I just had to say something.

Had and ingrown hair on the shaft of my dik once. Hurt like hell too, had to take a sterilized needle to i! Real cathartic venting here on the net.

Far as smoking goes, been there done that. Quit over twenty years ago. Was in Dusseldorf during the holidays and was partying with people that rolled their own cigarettes. At one point I took the tobacco and papers and rolled one of my own. I shocked my fellow partyers by liting it up, taking two drags or hits or what ever yah wana call it, and snuffing it out. Figured tobacco was ok, I just say no to weed though.

Cigarettes are a nicotene delivering device. Kinda like my Martinis are an alcohol delivering device

All I have to say is that I have wasted far too much time waiting on fellow riders who smoke, taking way too many smoke breaks when I could have been RIDING!
That and that I can't stand smoke, it always bothered my eyes and throat.

Just to follow up, I have not picked a cigarette up in over 2 years!! I don't even think about them anymore. Was checking some of my old post and seen this one. Thought I would give a follow up. Good luck to whomever is trying to quit, like I said before, if I can do it, anyone can.

Good on ya! Tell me a whiff of a good cigar or an aromatic pipe tobacco burning doesn't make you drool just a little. I disagree about anybody being able to quit because you did. If that were true the smokers would quit today. Ain't gonna happen.

    Did I quit? Damn right!

    Congratulations on quitting!!

Cigars and pipe tobacco never did turn me on, however a marlboro light was the bomb. Not anymore. The "quitting because I did" was a figure of speech which I'm sure you knew. For me to quit smoking was very hard, I liked smoking. Up to 2 packs a day. I was at the neighborhood convenient store the other day and was in line behind a guy who bought a pack of marlboro lights, over $5 a pack. DAMN!

I've been doing the smoking thing for 26 years now. Quit once for about 16 months, and picked it back up like I never even stopped. I want to quit, but I am still not at that point where I'm ready. For the brief period I quit, I do remember the difference in food taste, clothes, energy level and other additional benefits.

Congrats to those that have quit and stayed that way. Its not easy.

And as for $5 a pack LJ, in Jersey they are about $7.50 to $8.00 on average. Gas stations and mom and pop stores are even more. Check out NY prices though. In the city, a pack will set you back at least $10.

Quit last week....quit a couple of times before for a few years apiece but will not be looking back this time. Never had a reason to quit like this before so not seeing this through is not an option. Makes it much easier.

Glad to see that many of the "regulars" speak with unforked tongue about smoking. It might be interesting to see who are non, ex and current smokers. Factor in some of the regular BS and justification and it might provide a fair profile.

Darn right! A great indicator for a burnt valve or worn rings or sloppy valve seats. I'd get me a compression check right skippy.

I have quit and started again more times than I can count. One time quitting for 7 years. Basically quit for about 2 years other than a few cigars at Reggies last summer but then on the Kootenay Ride last summer, started again. And no one else on that ride smoked. No real triggers either. I like my little cheap cigars. But last November, suddenly without plan, I had my last cigar again. None since. But I have really wanted my little cheap cigars. Not a craving or anything like that, but just want one like someone may want ice cream or something. Go figure. But I think it is time to begin life without and quit quitting. I don't even smoke the green plantlike material. I do snort Keens Hot Mustard Powder though. Fack

It's amazing how much cigs/dig/alcohol can add up in a single year. My mother got her husband to smoke less and it's saved a bunch of $.

I like to light up a Swisser Sweet from time to time. Of course when I say time to time, that's about 6 months or more in between. LOL
