According to a German magazine (Das Motorrad), BMW has to recall 80000 K-series from 2003 until 2010, due to rear linkeage that can break and couse severe/fatal crash.
The worst part: They have known about this for some time. (Nov 2010)

holy crap! is that true? I am riding with a buddy today that rides a BMW. I can't remember all the letters though. I think his is one of those GS or whatever that Ewan MacGregor sold for them.

Hey reg, that big guy at the last SLO, was on a k1200s. I think Rich was his name. Can you let him know? I'd hate to see something like this happen to him.

Yknow, I was wondering if this was a BMW problem or just a fluke. I was on a test drive one day and saw a feller on the side of the road (standing luckily) next to his BMW K1200 (I think, if memory serves) on it's side. Pulled over to see if he was ok and help him stand it back up. He told me how he was just riding down the highway normally when the ass end dropped out from under him, chewed up the rear tire with the fender n stuff. He was able (somehow) to safely pull the bike over but with the ass on the ground the side stand wasn't gonna work and he just kinda layed it down.

This bike was rather clean too, older guy, not a squid. BMW should be ashamed for letting this slide.

It's a damn good thing Honda never let's things like that slide. Now if they would just pay me back for all the fucking money I had to spend on R/Rs, life would be just ducky.

Thankyou Jesus for my 79 BMW that hasn't killed me or anyone else yet.

Recalls safety or otherwise can be found on BMWs by Googling "bmw motorcycle recalls". The specifics seem to vary from source to source but probably more accurate than a bunch of old women yakking it up on a party line doing the "He said, she said" schtick.

Betcha theres a shitload of recalls on Hondas and even Combat Wombats that go unpunished. OMG! I am skeered to even punch in Harley..

Yep, BMW did replace the "snowflakes" on mine Beemer c. 1980-81.

Well, that's the price you have to pay for riding a Beemer!

It was about K series bike, which have had lot of mechanical problems in Europe, major engine brakedown after 15000 miles, exploded clutch after 12000miles on the clock, German Quality!

If the recall is on K bikes, and your buddy drives a GS, then he is OK; there is no K GS, only an R or F.

The current shape Triumph ST had a similar recall a few years ago after it
caused a fatality in the UK.

I checked with BMW of Ventura today regarding this issue. I have a 2001 BMW K1200rs. According to the tech, the only recalls are for 2007 & newer. no mention of any rear seal or rear end issues / failures. Since the dealerships get paid for recall work, I'd be surprised if they we sweeping this under the Beemer Bin. the tech's comment was that the "Interet is a scary place". well he certainly hasn't been Here!
if anybody finds real info about the 80million BMW bike recall, please post up.
    thanx.

I have a 09 K1300S and there is indeed a recall on a link in the rear suspension for K bikes. I got a call form the dealer last month. There is a bearing in said link that can rust and cause a failure. I will have it replaced in the spring as the bike is put away for winter.
