Hi, So there i was yesterday all ready for a good spin, roads dry and not much wind, get all geared up and out to the garage. Turn the key in the ignition push the starter and nothing but clicking. turned it off and tried again, still the same. All the idiot lights come on and the headlight works. Try bump starting, nearly fires but doesn't catch, tried a few more times and nothing. Took out battery and checked voltage, reading about 10.6v so i put it on charge, waited till it said 13.5v and put it back in, still the same, just the solenoid clicking. I have noticed that the clock has been gaining time and sometimes the trip meter would reset itself, am i experiencing the dreaded r/r problem or is it just the battery. Help e
Apparently the same thing is happening across the ocean, buddy. I have an new to me 03 sitting the driveway with a new, fully charged battery, and 5000 miles on the clock, the same coil clicking sound, and NO STARTING. I can jump it, but the minute I remove the cables, it dies. In the interest of world peace, would someone out there answer the international message of why our bikes won't start globally?
I know most FI systems have a minimum voltage to be able to work, anything to low she won't run, I'd put it back on the battery charger, that 13.5V should have worked, but, if it doesn't have the ability to handle a load at the same time shes turning over good chance she won't pop. so give it one more try, sounds to me a cell died in the battery. Then there's the dreaded RR curse. might while it's charging check all connections for corrosion. hope that helps.
After a few hours in the garage and a quick trip to the battery shop, it was, indeed, a deep short in the new battery. Returned and replaced, did a quick 50 miles in the freezing southwest. Went ahead and did the charging system checks and everything is great now. Best of luck across the seas....
thanks for the advice, i took out the battery to see what to order as i am going to replace the battery and r/r (if the original is not faulty ar least i'll have a spare) went to order via david silver spares and noticed the bike has the wrong battery in it, it has a YTX9 instead of YTX12. This could explain a lot. Previous owner must have just put it in to get the thing going for a while. What a git!
I had the same prob. with my f-3 i replaced the batt. & I also picked up a battery tender. That was about 3 years ago still going strong. The batt. tender is a good investment, Especially if u are a weekend warrior!
