new member here from st. petersburg,fl needing a little clarification on valve clearance

i'm originally from middle tn, and have a been a st pete,fl resident since jan. 2010. i became the owner of an '86 vfr700f interceptor new years eve (traded my '82 seca 650 for it). my question is this...what are the recommended valve clearances for it? or is there a satisfactory overall "happy" clearance? i have the vfr750 honda service manual i dl'ed off here, and wanted to be sure if i should go by the manual (.005 intake / .007 exhaust) (though mines a 700) or am i looking for diff clearances? ive spent a litte time searching the posts, but no definite answer. how imperative is it to have the valve adjusting tool? i am happy to be a member on this site, and appreciate any input.

clearances should be the same for both the 700 and 750 ( someone correct me if i'm wrong). Nice bike, the white 86 F models are rare. Maybe in the neighbor hood of 1000 produced that year. Take care of it. BTW what are the last 4 of the vin? I went to look at one up in Ga. recently that was number 81. Post some pics.

Your spec on clearance is correct, the same for all gen 2. Just use the go no go method and you will be fine. The tool is not a must but damn it sure does help, especially with the front intake valves. There is a post oot there with a pic I took of said tool. Will look for it or may post it again. Pretty simple tool.

thanks. the last 4 of the vin is 1739. i dont know if the original owner did it up to look like the white f's, or if it's a true white f. when i saw the ad the guy posted on cl (and the pic of the bike, i knew i had to have it. it just looked real good white w/ the black decals. as my 9yo son said, stormtrooper-ish). it sat for almost 2 years due to a bad clutch master cylinder, which i bought immediately after getting home on ebay. i spent the night of new years eve dumping the old gas out of the tank (very cloudy) and draining the bowls (surprisingly clean overall). i put a new set of plugs in the day after new years, and it fired right up. i have a guy who's going to do
the necessary carb clean.adjust, sync, and i'm going to do the valve clearances myself. i just wanted to be sure of what they were exactly. i don't know if you can tell from the pic, but po put zx-14 mufflers on it. i'd rather have the factory ones myself, but til then, it doesnt sound too bad at all.

Perhaps you can shorten them by about a foot. Couldn't get a good look at the bike with the avatar, was probably a RWB that was repainted or had the stickers removed. The white ones are pearl white metallic w/ gold accents and graphics. Good deal none the less.
