Replacing exhaust downpipes

    Hey folks,
    My collector box on my gen 5 800fi is getting pretty rusty so I'm looking to fix this issue. Is it worth just paying the garage to do it or is it easy enough to replace the pipes without jacking it up?
    I thought about painting the collector box but i dunno if it's worth it. Again though I don't see this being too easy without getting the bike in the air.
    Any advice or tips much appreciated as always!

    You're not concerned the paint will just cook off there?

    No I would be using heat exhaust paint, not household emulsion ;)

    I don't think removal is hard though it is fiddly.I have just replaced my headers with stainless headers.

    Getting sockets in to do up the bolts on the rear was a bit painful. I had added heat wrap to my pipes which gave me less room.

    Go for it, its not complex (though the bolt on top of the cat is in a bastard spot)..

    Its all relative to your experience but you'll save plenty doing it yourself.

    Not sure if you ever resolved this, but it's not too hard to pull those headers and reinstall them; of course, I made it easier by pulling the entire swingarm. :)

    It doesn't cost a fortune to send them to Jet Hot and have them ceramic coated, and they'll last a looooong time! Those rear header pipes can get extraordinarily hot and will cook a lot of high-temp paint. I sent my entire system to them, rusty as hell, and they fully cleaned them up and coated them. ...I even sent along the heat shield on the right side as it was all scuffed up, and it all came back looking like new.

    As for re-mounting them, I've found a really easy way to do it is using a ratcheting tie-down strap. You just need to offer a little directional guidance by hand while you ratchet, and make sure your new exhaust gaskets are seating correctly.

    Note that the clamps need to be on the actual header-pipes connecting to the manifold, so don't forget to push them up and out of the way before fitting the sections together! :)
