Hi, I'm a new guy on this forum, just joined today.I purchased a 1984 VF1000F about a month ago for a toy. The skin is in very nice condition, 12,500 miles, and runs nice. I'll be pulling it down to have the engine casings, front forks, hand rails, etc black powder coated. I'm also going to clean up the frame (it was a Florida bike), buff the valve covers and generally make the bike look new.But before I pull it apart, I wanted to know if I needed to look at the engine internals, so I had a dyno pull done. (It also did not seem to have the punch I had expected at mid to upper RPM)

Click on the link to see the printout.

Pretty pathetic power from a liter bike. The guy who ran the dyno said that my torque dropped because of the mixture going too rich. That is obvious in the printout, but I started wondering if the cams could be worn causing the severe drop. (I'm going to implement an oiling correction in the process) When I pull this thing down I want to correct what ever is wrong with it. If I can get the torque to go at least to 56 at 9,500, it will put 101hp on the wheel at that RPM. That should feel much better.
Does any one have a dyno pull from a VF1000F that would be considered "normal". I would really like to see one.

Thanks, and I hope to pick up a lot of good tips here.

I can't find the one I had done 15 yrs ago, and it was on my modded engine which was very rich in the midrange, but it ran 124 rwhp and 89ftlbs of tire shredding torque. Even in stock trim it pulled way harder than my dads 49 state model. Checking the specs show that his should be the same as my Canadian model. His had better low end and mine came on strong in the mid to top end.

    Omg

That's a BOAT load of torque!!!!
I'd love to get even close to that. I want to keep it looking stock, but I'm not opposed to some internal mods. So that means the exaust will need to stay but I can go with jets and cams.
I found a place that seems to sell a jet kit but I haven't found anyone who sells cams. Do you know if there are any available?

    What's a 49 state model?

    NO SMOG EQUIPMENT,
50 state or California model has smog & runs leaner:eek: .

Mine is a 86 but with HRC internals through out & you won't be able to come close to my torque & HP (see my avitar - stuck it with mods in a '05 VFR) .

But on the cam note, can't remember off hand but there is a few out there shops that can weld & regrind your stock cams.

    Thanks

Thanks for the info guys. Hopefully when I get down to the cams, they won't be worn. The bike is coming down now. I'm pulling it down and inspecting everything and determining what I will replace, powdercoat, paint, clean, etc.
The engine will be soon, hope it's not difficult to pull.

I'm definatly going to buy a jet kit and look at the carbs closly to find out why so much fuel is getting in. Then when it's back together I'll do another pull and go from there.

I have a 2002 Sabre that I rode in the mountains a lot. When I got the Interceptor it felt strange and quick handling. When I took it to the mountains, it was a blast. Much, much nicer in the twisties. Go into a turn at 3,000, twist it coming out, take it to 10,000, let off for the next turn, hardly ever shifted. When I came home and took the cruser out for dinner it scared me it felt so clunky. It felt like I was wrestling it just to make it turn. It will never go to the mountains again!

Try www.Megacyclecams.com They have a couple of grinds, don't go with the race one for the street. Check the float valves and the slides and diapragms for the richness. DON'T get a jet kit, just source new mains and pilots, much cheaper.

My first ride on the 1000 was much like yours, not much shifting!

Interesting. I've been on this site and I never noticed the link to a torque diagram.
His 92.5 N/m with the 4-1 system is equal to 68 ft/lbs which is great. The 85 N/m is about 62.5 ft/lbs which is good for stock.
About 3 months after this post I had put the bike back together and it had much improved power. I took it to the mountains and lost it in a turn. Slid it under a moving truck. I was going WAAAAY to fast as I was not accustomed to the extra boost.
Broke my right femur, totaled the bike. It's in the basement. Thought about bringing it back but I'm going to part it out. The engine along with many parts are still good, but the back end was ran over by the truck.
I guess the angel caught up with me just as it went down, as I didn't go under the truck. I believe guardian angels have a top speed of 65 mph, so you're on your own above that speed.
Anyhow, I'm all better now. I was sooooo proud of that bike, it broke my heart that I was so dumb and got it crushed.
