Hi VFRW, I have posted in the OZ/NZ section. But I thought I might share with you what is happening in Northern Aust. The past fortnight has seen some of the worst flooding in Australia's short history. Queensland which is one of the 7 states/territories over here is approx 40% flooded. The figures are unbelieveable. 1.3 million square kilometres or twice the size of Texas are under flood and rising. The capital city of Queensland (Brisbane) is under flood threat and expected to hit 4am tomorrow morning. (5 hours time) A town called Toowoomba got swamped by a flash flood yesterday and has basically with very little warning devastated it. The vision of cars getting swept away like plastic bottles. Considering that most of our country has been in drought for the past 10 years alot of the farming areas in that state have been destroyed. My thoughts and prayers go out to not only Viffers, but all those affected. Please be safe...
Have seen video on the news here several times. Really amazing. I'll keep my own little problems and be happy with them.
I've been following the progression of this ongoing disaster in the news for a couple of weeks now. The recent images coming out of Brisbane and Toowoomba seem almost biblical. Australia has always held a special place in my heart, and I know that Australian fortitude and resiliency will get all those affected through these difficult times. Best wishes....
Same as the others, been watching it on tv/internet. I also have an affection for Australia. Almost made it there twice. Still would like to. I don't think now's the time unless I bring my scuba gear. Hang in there and put the VFR's on high ground. Take care of yourselves and good luck.
I have a mate in Gladstone he has been sending pictures and videos of the disaster, unbelievable and devastating, is there anything we can do?
Although safe & dry 1,000km away, everyone I know knows someone who's been affected in Queensland. Donate to the flood relief appeal : Queensland Government is where you can donate to help. A lot of the people who've lost everything would have had no insurance, as they were below that magic "1 in 100 year flood" line on an insurance company's map and so had flood cover excluded from their policy. From all accounts, Brisbane has missed the 1974 flood levels, but as the city has twice the population as back then, the damage has been far worse. Heaven help them if it had been as bad as 1889 - another 4.5m higher! Hard to imagine the destruction...
I have friends all over Australia.... sending them messages right now.....most of them are in Melbourne and Sydney but there are a few that are scattered in the flood zones... Hang in there folks..you are in our thoughts.
The vidoes on TV are just sickening. My son was in Brisbane for a few months a couple years ago and he can't get over what he sees on TV. I wish the absolute best for everyone. Your International Red Cross is one agency who is likely right there right now helping out. They may not be able to help our Queenslander friends out for the long term, but they are certainly one of the first on site for disaster relief. Try to stay safe my friends/
