I know similar posts have cropped up before, but I also want to cover a few other things related to mileage.

So, here goes: I'm all lined up to pick up a 1994 VFR750 with 38k miles on it. I ride as much as I can, so miles rack up quickly. I am going to take this same VFR across the country and back in the late summer (http://vfrworld.com/forums/trips-events/33166-cross-country-tour.html), and I just want to get a decent read on the mileage of fellow member's bikes. I'm looking at about 10,000 miles in about 6 weeks. Reasonable for a 1994 VFR?

Also, any recommendations on what to look for problem-wise, and if this is a reasonable plan. I understand VFRs are unbelievably reliable bikes, I just like to be super-sure.

I think your biggest concern is non VFR specific items, tires ,chain and oil changes at that distance is going to be a problem. You will most likely have to change your tires at some point and your chain better be in very good shape. Aside from that I would check thr R/R and starter relay wiring to be sure it is all in good shape. After that I would not think twice aboot heading oot.

Toe, saving me from worry once again.
Yeah, I figured for the tires and chain. I was thinking taking a spare chain with me, maybe a spare rear sprocket. As far as tires, Probably going to fit fresh rubber and chain a couple of days before I leave to break them in, the replace the tires around 5k mark (obviously depending on the average wear-life), and the chain whenever needed.
The R/R was upgraded on this bike, but regular checks all summer will be made. Didn't know about the starter relay.

02 VFR Rider, I'm in Allston, but I'm going to be making a lot of trips this spring out to W. Mass. I'll let you know when I do. I'd love to have another Viffer to ride with in Mass!

I wouldn't carry a chain and sproket with me. That is a lot of weight you are tugging along. These should be reasonably available as you go along. MHO

if you start out with new chain/sprockets, which are relatively cheap, you should get at least 15,000 miles out of them.

+1 on what MrDen said, just make sure you carry a can of chain lube with you. Considering you will probably be putting several hundred miles on the bike everyday you should probably grab the chain lube at the end of the day and put a light coat on the chain while its still warm and you will be good to go for the next day's ride. Keep it lubed and adjusted and it will easily last the trip. Tires should really be the only thing you would have to replace during the trip, make sure the air filter is clean, and the brake pads have plenty of life left and let the open road take you where it may.

put the chain on a few weeks before you leave, since most of the "stretch" happens early in the life, get it out of the way at home, so it is easier to keep properly adjusted on your ride. I too would say do not carry an extra chain and sprockets with you. A lot of weight that you may not need, and you should be able to get a chain at any shop in the country. You don't have to get your chain at a Honda shop. Same with tires, you can go to any shop for those. I would say that I would probly pack an extra R/R though, that is light and it would be much harder to get if yours failed.

Great idea Spike. New chain and sprockets a couple weeks before the trip. Never thought of that. Beware that because you will be riding mostly highway, watch for the wear earlier than normal on the centre of the tire. That is where mine wear out cause I commute. And yes, a small can of chain lube. I lubed like Den said, at the end of every day on my distance trips. Simple and quick when the chain is still warm

The R/R on my 94' went out every 10K miles till I put an R6 replacement on it. Can't think of anything to add to the list.

Once again, invaluable information, everyone, thank you!
The PO says he upgraded the R/R. I have to find out what he upgraded to, but either way, never hurts to have a spare like that. Good point on carrying a spare chain.

Still curious on how many miles y'all have logged!

115,500 KM = 72,000 mile give or take on an 06. Two round trips of about 4,000 miles in about 1 1/2 weeks each. No problems. Nadda. Squat. Zip.

A whole shitload. I am not so anal that I keep records on stuff like that. Kind of takes away from the fun.

If you are fishing for how many miles a given VFR is good for then ask and be prepared for some whoppers or, you can just go to one or more of the threads about top speed, mileage and you'll get the drift.

I've ridden my bike one million miles, it goes 300 miles per hour, and it gets 118 miles per gallon. There, that should save you some time.

Badbilly has a 7th gen, it wont last till the weekend, it runs out of gas leaving the driveway, but it goes one thousand miles per hour.

Been riding since 74 and I can't remember back that far anymore. But it's been a few miles. Longest trip was around 3700 miles on the 83.

Yeah. I suppose some may think that. I am not keeping such records. I know the mileage cause this is my first bike ever and except two quick rides on fellow VFRW members who were riding with me. So all I have to do is look at my speedo.

I have never run out of gas on my bike...yet. Hmmmmm, a new thread. Where were you when you ran out of gas?

Ran out of fuel in my truck though. Note to self. Keep fuel in truck at all times. Diesels are a pain to restart when run out of fuel!

Point taken, folks; a poorly worded question it was. I could care less about how many miles you yourself have logged.

Mr. Vfourbear, you want to trade bikes? Mine only hits 60 in 2.4 or so seconds, covers the quarter in 11ish seconds, and, here's where its been dogging me, it's real. Bummer, that one.

Thank you Randy, that is one hell of a lot of miles that you've covered.
