On beautiful Sunday morning in September, in the middle of nowhere South Carolina my 91 suffered a spectacular engine failure at excessive speed (I apparently survived the crash). That slight vibration I had been feeling for a few days coming from the lower engine area was a conn rod bolt getting sheered. Had I simply taken the oil pan off when I first noticed the vibration and inspected the crank I would have found the nut that worked is way off and could have just torqued it back on. After 68k miles that's the first and only serious failure, impressive!

Naturally I parked the bike in my dining room and dismantled it before anybody could object. The more I got into it the more stuff needed fixin' & a simple rebuild has now turned into a restoration project. I got the cases, rods, pistons, ect. to build two motors for next to nothing from a backwoods motorcycle graveyard in NC. I've built the first motor with stock pistons and got in the bike (The second case is currently at the machinists getting bored out to accommodate CBR929 pistons).

So now I'm down to the details of getting everything back where it goes and I'm stuck. Like an idiot, I used masking tape to make labels for the parts i took off before i gave them a good cleaning and now most of the tape is gone or unreadable. I should have taken photos but I didn't think nearly 4 months would go by before I got to this point. I have three brackets left over & I can't figure out where they go. I suppose what I'm asking for is a few good photos of a 3rd gen with it's plastics off so I can see where they go.

When I'm done I'm sure I'll have a bunch of 3rd gen parts left over that I'd be willing to donate to anybody here who wants to pay shipping. I've gleaned so much useful information from you guys already it only seems fair. So far I'll need to get rid of: midpipes, headers, muffler, mirrors, rear footpeg brackets for a 4th gen, oil cooler, front brake calipers, levers (rashed) , footpegs, crankshaft... and three pistons with rods (haha).

Oh yeah, I also got a 929 shock with linkage, but can't figure out a good way to make it work without hacking up the swingarm. Swapping to a 4th gen swingarm would make it real easy because the shock mount is different, I'd just cast some adapter/extension brackets out of aluminum from the crankcase (I broke it into pieces with a sledge then melted that sucker down into a clay flowerpot with an acetylene torch, it was cathartic). So far I haven't been able to find a swingarm for a reasonable price because they seem to be a pretty popular mod for CBR's. I found one that wasn't too beat up but $300 seemed ridiculous. so if anybody's got one...

I think Karazy and Crusty are right the bracket on the right in your pic appears to be the fuel pump mount bracket, part number 5 in this pic.
Hard to say for sure but the part on the bottom in your pic looks like it might possibly be the tank drain stay bracket, part number 15 in this pic as well. VVVVVVV

The part on the left in your pic looks like the left side mount bracket for the air suction valve, part number 9 in this pic. VVVVVV

Right on! Thanks fellas. I was looking at the wrong end of the bike for the pump & drain brackets. The suction bracket won't be going back on since the PAIR system won't be going back on either (unless that bracket has a dual purpose). I have to say the VFR is a beautifully engineered bike with surprisingly simple engine internals. It's been fun tinkering but It's time to get it back into one piece so i can fit the carbon body work.

Got the right-mid, fender & seat cowl molded already. It's going to take at least 5 coats of laminate resin & a crapload of fine detail cutting and sanding but they should turn out great. My first job out of college was fabricating one-off fiberglass race car bodies for wind tunnel testing (and my parents thought a degree in sculpture would be useless, ha!) , compared to that I thought this would be easy, but its not. Carbon fiber cloth is a real bitch to work with. Knowing that any failure in your set up is going to cost you $50 in CF cloth doesn't help.
