I have an 85' vf500f, and the linkage for the shift lever is real loose and sloppy.
anyone have any quick or relatively simple way to fix this?
It would be really nice not to be blowing shifts all of the time.

I picked up th whole left side setup on ebay, and replaced it all.

Yeah, pretty common. Aside from the option mentioned (and you are taking the chance that it's no better than what you've already got) there really isn't a simple and easy way to fix it. Replacing the heim joints with something better (commonly available from McMaster-Carr) would help quite a bit. That's not terribly difficult. The rest of the slop comes from the pivot, which is kind of tough to improve without some effort.

I got lucky! The one I got from ebay was MUCH better than my original. My original was worn badly at the pivot.

My VF1000 is worn and sloppy as well, I picked up some brass shim stock, 0.002 thick to line the pivot shaft. Haven't gotten around to doing it yet but it may work.

Buy replacement boots. They are cheap and help take up the slack.
