Sorry, was this thread closed to further comment? (???)

Didn't mean to re-hash or open up old battles, as it were.

    Joe,

No, it was not closed. The sticker on your bike just substantiates the fact that 1) your bike is Fuel Injected (FI), by the "i" designation I presume, and 2) that the letter "Y" is also a way for the manufacturer to help distinguish between year models.

    John,

This was the 10 second argument. It is the full discussion.

Sorry, but you must to know..."Fi" is not "Fuel injection", but... "French Interceptor"!

Here in Oz I noticed my 98 came out in three types:

    1. VFR800
    2. VFR800F
    3. VFR800Fi

Have been dying to know what that all means.

lmao. I had no idea that's what it stood for. :noidea: I knew it wasn't Forced Induction cause we don't have a turbo or SC on board. I wonder how scary those would make our bikes? lol

    It's simple.

There's no secret, it just didn't come out in 3 kinds.
All the same, apart from minor mods in different model years.

It still doesn't make any sense to me. I've SEEN three 98 VFR's all with the different marking stamped on the VIN plate. I understand there were subtle differences with the 98-01 range.. anyone else know?

    Oferfuxache.

Whether you have seen three VFR's or not, the fact is that ALL model year bikes ARE THE SAME.

There are differences during the run of 5th Generation bikes FROM MODEL YEAR TO MODEL YEAR. It may be that what you have seen is a 98 model year bike , and a 99 model year bike registered during 98 or vice versa. There never were different versions of the bike offered for sale during any particular year in any particular country , excluding versions restricted for sale due to emissions regulations/power output restrictions etc.

    Look here

    http://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/BVINSystem.htm

The Vin plates are kinda meant to have differences in them...

    A VFR800 is a VFR800F is a VFR800Fi is a VFR800FiW

Unless you happen to have the 3 cylinder, carburetted, shaft driven version of course..:yield:

I just find it funny how two bikes manufactured 1 month between each other can have different designations on thier VIN plate, and on some websites attract a higher price.

I was not referring to the VIN "number" as such, moreso the designation printed above that. I know what you are saying though, and I have always doubted there is a difference within the 98 range. Just odd they have different things printed on exactly the same designed bike.

Cheers for the info with the VIN's... lets hope that three cylinder carbie shaft-driven owner goes out and buys a real VFR.
