It should have come "ready to paint".. If not give itt a good sand with a high grit sandpaper to remove imperfectiond, don't use an electric sander on this just do it by hand. then give it a wet sand at a high grit. ahoot it with primer , let dry another wet sand more primer let it dry... then color.. then when you shoot it don't use your wrist. hold the gun and move your whole arm ...don't ry and cover it all in one pass. use nice sweeping motions and go ahead and over spray.. in other words don't release the trigger till your off the end of your peice that you are painting

If the aftermarket bodywork is ready to paint out of the box you're probably better off taking it to a pro since they will be better able to match the existing paint on the bike which will likely be somewhat faded. In addition to this I am pretty sure the Airtech stuff does NOT have the mounting points drilled so it may be a little challenging getting everything lined up perfectly before attemping to mount it. Keep in mind that most of the cost associated with having something painted is due to the prepwork that is involved. If no prepwork is required it should be pretty cheap to just have it sprayed by a pro (unless you are just looking for an excuse to buy a paint gun)

+1 with Rollin, best to play it safe and have it done correctly the first time. I have learned the hard way that I am no painter.

As mentioned, the drilled holes are up to you to prep. Along with all of the oil of fingerprints, shipping, whatever that is still on the surfaces. Do a pre-fit, drill the holes, grind any excess off, then you can either send it in to your favorite shop for painting or do it yourself. Fun stuff for sure. Enjoy.

Parts from Airtech ain't ready to paint nohow. There is some fitting and drilling to do first. The parts have a prime coat of sorts on them but in painting to "match" a factory job even a 91 (like mine) , painting is a system starting with basic sanding prep, a filler/ primer usually 2-3 coats, more sanding, a color coat or two or three since your stock 91 is red and red, unless it's Ferrarri red doesn't cover worth a shit. Then color sanding and a clear coat. Even a clearcoat may need some sanding back and rubbing out.

Part B: These two component automotive paints are toxic. We are not talking just a little poopy toxic but drool in your oatmeal toxic. They are also expensive and do not work at all well in elcheapo spray rigs.

Then we got your different spray rigs.. Conventional types that require an air compressor, HVLP which require either a turbine or an air compressor and airless that unless you have experience is really difficult to master painting small stuff.

Best bet: Fit your new tail section and have someone else do the paintwork. All this rattlecan shit and shooting paint in a garage is just going to give you a crappy paint job.

Advice: rip off all your plastic and paint the whole bike.

    BadBilly hates stockers.. ;)

Hit your public library for a recently written text on auto painting. There are books on bike painting but any well written text on auto painting translates.

    What they all said LOL!

I have a airtech front cowl and rear since I thought the 97 was going all 'track'. Airtech's stuff doesn't come "ready to paint". Those pieces totally need cleaned, sanded and primed.

Also, it is best to do all you drilling, cutting, etc. BEFORE you paint.

A little research goes a long way ;-)
