I always though you had to drill into the case to perform this mod?

Well originally the Dave Dodge kit made it so you didn't have to with the whole adapter in between the oil filter and the motor. Now someone else is making the same exact kit for about $100 less than the Dave Dodge kit.

Well thats the thing, they seem to be a carbon copy of the $270 dave dodge kit but I wasn't sure if it was the same quality. His feedback on them seems to be good though

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the vf500 should NOT use the kit that had the oil filter adapter.

The 500 needed the oil galley drilled and tapped as Matt remembers.

That's what my memory says. I think if a guy went to the sabremag website and read up on Dave Dodges old info, you'd find this information.

That's probably right, I remember reading the kit is not for use or not recommended on 500s. Both guys only sell kits for v45/700 or the big ol v65.

    +1

A while back I wrote to Dave Dodge about the option of adding one of his top end oiling kits on my '84 VF500F. Dave D wrote that he does not recommend adding this kit on a VF500F.

This said, I believe if you are going to add a top end oiling system, tapping off of the galley is a much better method.

Something to keep in mind is that the main oil gallery type kit came first, the oil filter plate type second. The 500's can certainly use an oiling mod, but make sure it's a main oil gallery type and doesn't get the supply from the oil filter area. In general the main oil gallery type kits are superior to the oil filter plate ones, the latter are just easier to install.

I know these are NLA from DMr but is there a source for a 'how to' guide on adding an oil galley mod for the VF500F?

    Thx!

Start holding your breath. JamieD does not share such things and will likely ignore your request instead. Shows his wonderful attitude and willingness to help people around here.

Or if I call him out and piss him off real bad, you might get lucky and he'll build you a special kit just to "show tink". But the 'how to' info is proprietary.

He can't be responsible for you doing it wrong and blowing up your motor. But if he can convince you that there's a shock problem with your ride he'll gladly take your money and let you run around and hurt yourself rather than fully diagnose a problem. That's different.

Tink you should keep those messages private and get laid.

Anyways - I have a Dave Dodge kit on my VF1000 and it works great. Even if that is a copy, i dont see why it wouldn't work for you. Anything is probably better than stock on the 700-1000's! I read somewhere that the oil gallery type kit starves it of oil on low end rpm's and that the 2 line from the filter kits work much better for this.

Overflow from the other thread. Apologies to you. There's history on the topics mentioned and some will understand. I've said my peace on it and moving on.

Unfortunately after contacting him, I learned right now he only has the 2 line kits for the V65 magna. The interceptor uses a slightly slimmer profile adapter for room with the cowl and exhaust and such, so until he makes one for the v45 and 700 it looks like I'm stuck with the $300 option.

Nah, that's not true. A properly designed kit of either style will not effect bottom end oil pressure.

bump to revisit this issue: since I researched after I bought the 83 I have heard about the cam and rocker arm issues. I heard about a site - hole shot and visited it. But then I talked to the guy who sold me the bike and he's been around bikes for a long time and he told me that he thought it was for the 1000 or 1100 cc bikes only and not for the 750. The post here also suggest that the 500 may not need it. any thoughts.

    thanks for your time,

To my knowledge it was recommended on the bikes above 500cc including the 1kR even though it was the first one with the gear driven cams
