    Hi,

I have discovered not all 87 VFR 700's are the same. Is there any way to know specifically what the differences between the bikes are? Was there a particular month of manufacture where Honda changed things around? My bike was made in Nov 86 and the parts bike I bought was made in May 1987. Do I need to stick with looking for parts for a 1986 VFR750 to match to my bike? Or, something else? The big difference I have found so far is the main fairing bracket I bought on Ebay for an 87 did not work on my bike. I am curious how many other differences there are.

    Thanks.

You sure you bought an 87 bracket? I bought a set of carbs from a guy that swore up and down they were from an '86 750.

They weren't and ebay wound up bitch slapping him for trying to give me negative feedback in his comments when I returned them.

The only real differences body-wise on 86's and 87's should be the gauge panel and the inner panels and the color of the fairings.

    +1 to what Dukiedook said.

What model VFR do you have Amkazen? If the dash looks like this you've got an F Model.

All 87's were an F2, 86 models came in an F1 (RWB 700 and 750) and an F2 (Pearl white 700 only) and the faring mounts are the same for F2 on both years. 86 wiring and tach's were unique to that year wiring due to the extra speed sensor on the rear head (will read half RPM). The 750 left side switch gear wiring is unique to just that animal, the clutch covers and pick up coils will not swap oot and 87 CDI's went to digital. What did I forget?

Hi, I have a Pearl White F2 model and the manufacturers plate says it was produced in Nov 1986. It's "birthday" is April 25, 1987, when I took it off the showroom floor. It also has another birthday of June 28, 2006, when I bought it back from the 3rd owner..I sold it in 2001 and regretted it immediately. It took me 5 years to find the same exact one again.

So, I know it is an F2. The main bracket I bought on EBay that did not work "supposedly" was off a 1987 but it did not fit. The top of the bracket forms a point, a "V". The one on my bike was more straight across.

I am hoping the parts off the blue parts bike will work if I cannot get the motor to unstick. Otherwise, I have to go thru the hassle of taking it apart, packing things up, and selling them on Ebay. The blue one is in good condition..just needs the fairing bolts...all of them, to include the windscreen bolts. Ugh.

With regards to parts compatibility, F2 Frames are a bit different. F2 shock is longer, but I'm not sure if that manifested in a change in the mount.

I still have 86 and 87 frames hanging on the wall here. Side by side, the 87 frames have nicer welds and some of the engine mount tabs are beefier and squared off instead of round.

If your 87 is an F2 you will see the triple clamp is different in where the ignition switch mounts. Fuse box moves from the triple to the cluster on the F2.

I think it's safe to say that anything bought on eBay, unless you can clearly identify it from the pictures, is suspect. I can't tell you how many times I've seen parts mislabeled as fitting a particular bike or range of years when it won't. eBay is a wonderful thing but "buyer beware" should still be advised.
