I have a fun and hypothetical question, if you could buy a second bike designed only for fun (no compromises or need for practicality) what would it be and why? Then on the opposite end of the spectrum what would be the most utilitarian bike you can think of? (no fun just practicality)

The first is a motorcycle and the second as described is a car.

    Ok, I'll bite...

Fun: Ducati Hypermotard, probably the 796--light and I hear incredibly fun.

Practical/no fun: 2002 Kawasaki Concourse--the one with the Samsonite-looking luggage--although a great bike, a friend of mine had one and sold it because he got bored with it after 1 summer.

Answer to question one would be an Agusta F4CC. Answer to #2 would be a 5th gen.

    Forecast is calling for snow.

All the fun bikes I can think of are SOOO far beyond my abilities that they wouldn't be fun, so I think one of the V8 conversions from Ian Drysdale in Australia would be my fun bike. It would just be neat to have a mid-sized V8 bike.

For practicality, either a scooter like SS mentioned or an old Honda CB175 with a milk crate strapped to a luggage rack.

    Been there...already done that!
I got the 2009 Triumph Daytona 675 to be a foil for the VFR and it IS pure fun! IMHO it is the essence of a motorcycle: light, powerful, flickable, great brakes, wicked stock exhaust and a real beauty in Black! And, like the VFR you will not see yourself coming and going all day long. It is not a common bike.
But then, I hardly rode the VFR after that and eventually traded it away for Fun Bike #2: 2006 Kawasaki ZX-10R.
(You all are probably getting tired of me saying this periodically on threads like this!)
For utility I'd also have to say the Kawa KLR 650...I started off on that bike though and it is no longer in the garage since I have the truck for "utility" and Fun is...

    More Fun!

One can never have enough bikes!

    For fun . . . my 1990 Ducati 851 (which is now for sale) . . .

For practical fun . . . my '98 VFR800. Age has caught up to me and now I must lean towards practical.

Practical for street useage? I am still happy with the zx7 or the ninja 750F for a 3 day 2000 mile wandering, and the kz 1000P for long hauls. The 06 10r is a fun ride for sure. A bud of mine had a 700 VFR (I think it was) and it proved to be a capable every day ride as well. Everyones definition of fun and capable will differ to some extent.

Fun for me would be something small and light, along the lines of a street triple 675. As far as practicality and utility go, and not just because I saw two of them loaded up cruising down I-80 yesterday, the BMW R1200GS. If only I were a few inches taller...
