I am going to look at a 98 with 16,900 miles. Very good condition. Micron pipe, heated grips, hookup for electric vest, Givi tank bag, Pirelli Strada tires. $4200. The owner stated that the bike had been dropped by the previous owner and it caused a scratch on the lower left side. As long as the scratch is just a scratch, is this a good price. It hasn't had the 16000 mile service. Local mechanic gave me a $200 estimate for the valves. I will probably do them myself. How good is the micron pipe? I will also take a voltmeter with me to check the R/R at idle. Should I be looking for any thing above 12.5 vdc up to 14vdc? Is there anything else to look for?

$4200 seems like a decent price considering all the goodies that are on her. Hmmmm...is it just a scratch....???

My 98 just got a Micron put on her in Oct. She loves it. Makes her purrrrr (but deep like a cat named Barry White) Rest assured, there will probably be 20 posts about Staintunes being better after this post, you watch..... let it all fall on deaf ears.

The price for the 16K maint is not actually that bad considering that they are asking 5 to 6 bills in Fayetteville. (I need to look around more first).

As for the R/R, I think mine is getting ready to crap the bed, looked into a new one online. They are about 100 bucks. Not too bad.

    Thanks Chris
I actually called about a 2000 down in Fayetteville. Do you have the high mount Micron? Can I still mount luggage with the high mount exhaust?

I went with low mount. Did not want to take the risk. I think it looks better anyway. I have a picture in the photo gallery somewhere...

I recently got a '98. From what I paid, $4200 doesn't sound bad to me, and if he is asking that, he will likely take $4k... and $4k sounds pretty good.

Sounds like you know what you are doing... definately check the R/R... mine went after a week... bummer, replaced it, never a problem since.

I have heard good things about micron (I went between them and the 2bros I ended up with). It should sound great... and you will fall in love.

    Best of luck.

I have the high mount carbon micron on my 98. I love the sound! I have thought about putting the hard bags on but have not gotten past the thinking stage. There is a thread around here somewhere where a guy got them on with some spacers and other parts so it is possible.

I have the '98 with Givi PL161 tube racks and E360 (40 ltr). Two-bros high mount (oval can). No problems with the rack and the exhaust (but had an unrelated problem between rack and cowl).

So I went to look today and it seems to be what I would expect for a ten year old motorcycle. It is not the cleanest ive seen. The crack is on the left side and it is right where the left side fairing turns in just above the radiator. There are two others, one around the bolt that holds the fairing on and another small one in the tail piece. They don't bother me at all. The rest looks ok just dirty. I started the bike and it fired right off. Sounded smooth and I didn't notice any blow by out the exhaust. The grip heat works and the tires look like they only have 1000 miles on them. The bike now has 17000 on the odometer. I forgot my meter but I did not see any flickering of the headlights so I assume the R/R is ok. I wouldn't blame him if it went out a month after purchasing it b/c this seems to be a common problem. The only question I have is for those who have Micron pipes. Does the pipe turn out at a slight angle from the bike or should it be exactly parallel with the bike? It has no visible signs of damage. His description of the bike was exactly as he stated over the phone. He said he would take $4000. He offered to let me ride it so next weekend I am going back to take it for a spin. If all goes well I think I will buy it. I think I'll offer $3800 and see what happens. Overall I think it's in good condition.

Not to knock the bike but with it being down once and having some damage that the price should be a little lower. I payed 3K for mine with all the extras like sargent seat, exaust, intake, power commander and some other small things. Maybe i just got lucky but i would talk him down a little more.

So, I just got back from riding the bike. I like the seating position and love the power. The bike seemed to have warped rotors. Every time I applied the breaks you I could feel the vibration. It felt exactly like a car with warped rotors. I am not going to buy this one, but I will definitely buy a generation 5 VFR800. I am 6' and it was very comfortable for a sport/tourer. Thanks for all the help though.

I definitely would not turn down a clean 4th generation. There seem to be more 5th generations available though.
