New to VFR World

Hello all. My name is Josh and I'm new to VFR World. Currently, own a 5th Gen VFR. Absolutlely, love it!! I've found this website very helpful and informative. I am at the end of my 2nd riding season, sadly. (Canadian Winter) Anywho, suppose that's it for now, but I hope to jump into the mix on this website and continue to learn about the best brand of Motorcycle in the world; VFR.

Welcome from the Wet Coast. I normally drive year round here but they are predicting a cold winter this year here. That equates to snow.I've been caught in the snow....not nice at all you know. Where's home?

 

Hey Randy. Thanks for your post. Yeah, you gotta love our Canadian Winters, eh? I live in Southern Ontario, in a small little town very close to Lake Ontario.. Since I've been riding for two years or so, I always dread Winter, to me riding is done when Winter starts to dig it's teeth in until about March. So, Randy how do you manage to ride during our Winter? Especially in BC man... You are a crazy Canuck! J/k..

 

Mostly rain here in the Fraser River Valley. Temps usually hover just above freezing. Still ride in sub zero if there i sno precip. Rode once in -9C but that was freeking cold. I do have all the right gear though. But have been caught in the snow when the weather man was wrong. Not that that ever happens. It was 4 C on the commute home tonight but they are calling for snow so I think I will be taking the HMCS GMC Sierra to work tomorrow.

Boy I wish my 99 was as clean as that, though I bought it with a few uh... character features. How many miles are on your bike?

Hey Redrum, I hope we still have a few weeks of riding left here in Ontario. A few days here in there would definitely suffice.
I'm glad to hear all of the positive comments about my bike, greatly appreciated. My opinion might be slightly biased, but I think I like 5th Gens the most. Something about them..
And Davis5g, your bike looks amazing man! I'm not the first owner of mine, (I believe I'm the second), and the previous owner of my Viffer ruined my Black Rims. I believe he didn't keep the upkeep on the entire bike very well at all.. (Ass, shake's fist at previous owner) I can't seem to stop upgrading and waxing mine. Ok, gettin' off topic here. There is 26,800KM on my bike and I just aquired it in early Sept, so I don't think I've even put 400KM on it. How many miles/Kilometers do you guys have on your Viffers?

 

Well alrighty, your bike has 16,600 miles on it, Mine turned 16,000 a couple weeks ago, I put 3300 miles on it since I got it in august. I drove a ten hour round trip to pick it up. I think I'm the fourth owner of the bike from what the previous owner told me. The Kentucky title I received said the previous title state was Illinois and now it resides with me in Pennsylvania. If only the bike could talk, the stories it could tell. Mine was reasonably well cared for with the exception of the chain being a little crusty. I changed the engine oil, coolant, air filter, and spark plugs when I got it, I'll be doing the engine oil again this winter, as well as the brake and clutch fluid, and changing the chain. Check on your air filter, as they are supposed to be changed at 12,000 miles(19300km) and can be easily overlooked. The service manual says to change the spark plugs every 8k miles(12k km), but i think that is a bit excessive as the plugs i changed out looked pretty darn good. Have fun with it, and make sure when the snow clears in the spring you get out and do some trips, as the bike is a great sport touring rig.

 

12 K KM sounds rediculously off. I have over 114.ooo km and on my third set of plugs.

Thanks Davis5g. I will definitely be replacing the Air Filter over the Winter. Maybe one of those K and N filters I suppose. Do u really get a couple more horsepower out of those things? What exactly are the advantages to K and N Air Filters? Don't know too much about them. You've put 3300 miles on 'er, eh? Wow, I wish that I took mine out a little more, but, life always seems to get in the way. I need to change my chain too I think. I took some WD 40 to it after I bought the bike, decided not to put the Chain lube that I have for the chain because I was worried about the oil getting all over the rear of the bike. Maybe, this wasn't the smartest choice I've ever made, but the WD 40 seemed to bring the chain back to life. It's rusted fairly bad though and looks like garbage. Thanks for all of the good advice Davis5g.
Hey Alaskan. How's it goin' man? I would have to agree with you about the colour, I've always loved the Red n' Black colour combo. Your bike looks great too and I guess we share the same colour for our bikes. Nice. Oh, by the way, how is the PCIII? Could someone that only knows a little bit more then the basics about bikes use a PC? I'd love to grab a new one someday.

 

A Power Commander will allow an experienced tuner to adjust the air/fuel ratio across the powerband. My bike runs more smoothly as a result. It cured my bike's snatchy response ("ON!" "OFF!") at small throttle openings. It also eased my bike's VTEC transition - something that you and your 2000 VFR don't have to concern yourselves with. I also got an extremely modest power gain out of the PC and map.

Do you need to rush out and spend your $$$ on a Power Commander and a dynotune? Nope. Do some reading up and enjoy the bike. It sure looks clean.

 

Heres a way to inspect your chain for wear. First, set the tension to the standard approximately one inch of deflection between the sprockets. With this set, grab one of the pins on the chain at the rearmost part of the rear sprocket and pull the chain away from the sprocket. If you can pull the chain back about half the length of one of the teeth, then its about time to be replaced. Stiff or kinked links are also a sign its time for a new chain. WD40 isn't bad as a lube for the o-ring sealed chains on streetbikes, really the most important part is to keep them from rusting and providing a thin layer of lube for where the rollers contact the sprocket. Check the sprocket teeth, especially the front one, for worn or "shark finned" teeth, as worn sprockets will eat a new chain. Aside from checking to see if the voltage rectifier and regular has been upgraded from the stock one, get her ready for the spring so you can take some trips. Have fun with it.

 

Thanks guys. Awesome advice all across the board. The bike has already been a joy and I really don't know what I would do without it.. I'm happy so far that I've added the D and D, (Race Pak), Carbon Fiber slip-on, the new Corbin seat, the VFR chrome master cylinder and Front brake cover and lastly the dark Black tinted windshield. Gotta stop spendin' money on er' though, but I'm sure everyone finds there's always something more you want for your bike.
I will definitely follow your advice Davis5g and get my chain figured out. Maybe do some reading on a PC. Gonna be a long Winter...

I totally agree, Steve! 5th Gens that are Red are definitely the quickest. Your bike looks awesome too man. Very nice. How's the Jardine slip-on?
