Hi there, anyone out there upgraded the rear shock on %th Gen 98-01 Intercepter. I'm thinking of Wilbers/Elka, any feedback welcome. Ohlins are a little $$$ for me! I ride the VFR pretty hard and love the versatility of this model. The Std Showa shock does an ok job but struggles when pushed.

    Cheers,

lots of shock upgrade threads have been done if you use the search box. The VFR stock shock is a pile. I believe a 929 shock will work in the 5th with some mods.

the 929 is a serviceable unit. I found a used one on ebay for $30 U.S. You should be able to find a local guy who can rebuild the unit to like new and spring it for your weight and style. Just need to get someone to build the adapter mount. By the time you paid for a rebuilt US shock plus shipping half way across the world, you may as well have bought Ohlins.

Many thanks 4 ya help. Hey, thinking of doing this conversion. Know anyone else who's done it? I think I'll go the full job and have shock re-valved etc, appears good value next to an Ohlins/Penske/Elka and the main diff is only the hydr pre-load adjustment is not on the Showa.

Are u still happy with your shock & performance?

    Cheers

mine was night and day difference just going with a used stock 929 that hasn't even been rebuilt yet. Extremely happy. A local sport bike board has a few racers on it and a couple guys who are very qualified and highly recommended to rebuild. This winter I'll pull my 929 back off and have the local guy rebuild it for me.

Local guys charges $100 plus parts. I'll respring, valve, and fluid. So should end up running me close to $300 plus the $30 I bought the shock for.

Thanks man, JD has been very helpful thus far and he's quoted approx $150 more than your cost to get the re-built/valved shock to me down here, not worth me dick'n around trying to do it here for that $ especially if it is as good as y'all say. I'm patient, good things come to those who wait! Gota go, will search topic soon. :)

    Cheers

    Hi all,

In my research I found wilbers, penske, ohlins (I have been told HO801 no longer available) matris and hyper pro products.

I went for the ohlins as I got a good deal $900.

On nice smooth roads it is awesome. It also changed the bike when riding with a side wind. Much more stable.

That being said the bike is a little less comfy and forgiving of poor road surfaces potholes etc. I still need to get the SAG re-adjusted so this may change.

See below the ohlins and showa side by side. Theres a big difference with the springs

I think getting rid of the showa is a must given that most 5th gens will have well over 25000km by now.

I think the wilbers was the cheapest new shock I could find and they may be a good option for people not hitting the track.
